Self-employed Islanders whose livelihoods have been affected by coronavirus will be able to claim a second payment of up to £6,570 from today (Monday) – as the government continues to help drive the UK’s recovery.
Over 2.7 million people across the country benefited from the first stage of the Self Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) – with the government handing out £7.8 billion of grants to help them through the crisis.
Those eligible will now be able to receive a second and final grant worth 70% of their average monthly trading profits, with the money set to land in their bank accounts within 6 working days of making a claim.
Anyone whose self-employed business has been adversely affected by coronavirus since 14th July is eligible for the scheme.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak has said:
“Our self employment income support scheme has already helped millions of hard working people, whose get up and go drive is crucial to our economy.
“It means that people’s livelihoods across the country will remain protected as we continue our economic recovery – helping them get back on their feet as we return to normal”.
HMRC will contact all potentially eligible customers to advise them that they can claim for a second and final SEISS grant.
The eligibility criteria remains the same as for the first grant, with people needing to have had trading profits of no more than £50,000, making up at least half of their total income.
Guidance on how the grant works and how to apply can be found here.

never helped the newly self employed but they still take our taxes and NI
Lost my vote next time around.
Don’t get it. If you are newly self employed, you will not have put in accounts and NOT paid Tax-NI. If you put in accounts and paid Tax-NI previously, you will have been entitled to a grant if you earned less than £50,000 in the year.
The government decided that the newly self employed didn’t need any help because it was too difficult for them to arrange (they didn’t want to).
That doesn’t mean that our bills stop coming in or we stop paying taxes. Just because our tax return hasn’t been done yet, it doesn’t mean we won’t be taxed for any period.
The tax office still knows what we earned last year and every single year of our lives, either through p60 or tax return. They could have arranged something for us based on previous income rather than throwing us under the bus financially. When I contacted Bob Seelys office I was given the number for a food bank.. Yeah…. Thanks Bob
It will take me years to pay off the debt that has come from this failure despite Rishi Sunak saying “No one will be left behind”… Liars!
And still despite having a tax return in now, none of us are eligable for this scheme either! Thanks for that also!
Yes tim this is all very true
Iv worked for over 30 years. Never claimed anything
What all so pees me off is that a lot of people who put claims in and got them some over 3k a month we’re still working and i had to use my savings after being forced to stop working
This guv are useless
hope we can have it in cash!
