Heritage sites across the Isle of Wight will benefit from Government funding as part of the Culture Recovery Fund.
The fund, aimed at boosting econimies across the United Kingdom, is a £35 million pot of money which is being issued to 142 sites nationwide.
On the Isle of Wight, Newport Minster, St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Church, and Quarr Abbey will all receive funding after being recordnised by the fund.
Newport Minster will receive £584,189, Quarr Abbey will receive £229,817, and St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Church will benefit from £52,800.
The good news was announced by Historic England, with Culture Secretary, Nadine Dorries, commenting:
“From local churches to ancient buildings and landscapes, the UK’s unique heritage makes our towns, cities and villages stronger, more vibrant and helps bring communities together.
“This latest funding will help protect sites including Jane Austen’s House and Hampton Court Palace for future generations and help them build back better from the pandemic.”
Isn’t Quarr Abbey part business too ?
Why are my taxes being given to churches. They gouge enough money out of visitors already. Maybe if I declare my home a church I can get some free money.
maybe greedy Abby can now lower there overpriced cafe food then! tbh the money could be better spent elsewhere than churches.who cases! amazing they find do much spare cash.most charge a fee too go and shouldnt need it really.
2nd time lucky?????
Don’t like the prices Don’t eat walk with your feet!!!!!!!
This is part of our Heritage and I personally find it a very relaxing place to go .
It is a very individual thing and you really need to appreciate other people’s views, one size doesn’t fit all …..
And as the saying goes live and let live ….
Isn’t the church of England the richest land owner in the country ??
Yep and they still get the ‘begging plates’ out on a Sunday.
Funny how lots of churches over time have got their begging caps out for new roofs – if they’d spent their accrued money throughout the church’s life and maintained these buildings they wouldn’t need to ask for money from anywhere else. Churches should not come under heritage sites – much better causes out there.
I would rather my hard earned taxes goes to causes like this than to people on benefits many who are too lazy to work.
At last, an alternative observation to balance the conversation. Gets my vote.
Don’t be so grumpy about Quarr Abbey copping a relatively modest £230k; it’s a great place to take kids and I’d rather the Government spent our cash on lasting heritage, instead some of the last 2 years’ profigate and excessive outsourcing of billions of pounds to dubious commercial providers
Problem being, as Quarr has a free car park, unlike so many other places, it then ends up attracting those who are the least respectful of this place of worship, with their state funded children running amock, and the parent, glued to a screen, not caring so long as they can sit, spend the state aid on a coffee and cake, not caring what Ty, Chelsea, Angel, Paris and numerous other of their delights ruin.
