It was a fantastic experience for the thousands who attended Isle of Wight Day at Brading Roman Villa over the weekend.
The theme was Be A Roman For A Day, with arts and crafts activities such as sword and shield making, along with meeting real-life Roman soldiers and characters enjoyed by those who attended.
People could find out about Roman life at the time, look at armour close up and children took part in the Roman soldier school! Adding to the family fun was food, live entertainment, bouncy castles, a Victorian funfair and of course the Isle of Wight Day mascot, Nipper The Crab.
Over 40 voluntary and community organisations attended the event, explaining what they did within the Island community and how people can get involved as volunteers.
Mike Bulpitt from Community Action commented on the day:
“All the volunteer groups that work with us and attended on the day were delighted with the numbers of people wanting to know about their organisation, and for many, how they could get involved as volunteers.”
Isle of Wight Day returns on Saturday 21st September 2024. www.isleofwightday.org.

Pity Roman Britain came to an end. It inaugurated hundreds of years of tribal savagery by invading ‘painted faces’. What might have been can only be imagined.
