An Island woman in her 60s was almost conned out of nearly £9000 after she received a phone call from a man claiming to be from BT.
The man, who is said to have had an Indian accent, claimed someone had used the Cowes woman’s details and the IP address of her computer to commit fraud. The caller managed to convince her to let him take control of her computer and give him enough of her bank details to move the cash out of her accounts. Her bank though luckily noticed the unusual transactions and contacted her and in turn she contacted police.
The bank managed to act in time to stop the money being sent by Western Union to an account abroad.
Hampshire Constabulary are warning Islanders to be aware of these type of scams and not to pass on information to anyone you think might find it useful.
If you believe you may have fallen victim to a fraud like this contact your bank as quickly as possible and let Police know by calling 101.
