A bank in the heart of the Isle of Wight’s county town wants to put spikes on its roof to stop people climbing on it.
HSBC, on the corner of St James Street and Pyle Street, in Newport, is seeking permission to install rotating metal security spikes on the edge of its wall that connects with CEX.
Currently, there is a parapet wall between the two flat roof levels which people have used to climb up from one store to the other.
The anti-climb spikes, which could be powder-coated black and mounted to the parapet wall, could provide security to the roof, HSBC hopes.
In recent years, problems with adults and youths climbing on shop roofs in Newport has been an issue highlighted by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.
The police force appealed to parents to explain the dangers of going onto shop roofs to their children.
While there may be damage caused to the roofs, police said there was also a significant risk of serious injury to the children.
Planning documents for the national bank say it does not envisage the spikes would have a major impact on the building.
You can view the plans, 23/01836/FUL, on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until 24th November.

Then electrify them.
Well I can just imagine the response from the Council’s Planning Dept. It’ll be refused because of the likely hood of the “little darlings” injuring themselves on the spikes…..
Why ask just do it?council dont give a crap about most things anyway how cares what happens to the feral scum anyway..
Great idea.
If someone gets injured it’s their own thought, they should not have been up there in the
First place.
Just put electrified netting up there. Feral brats and low life getting out of control now. If they get hurt, tough, shouldn’t be up there
Good idea, we need to rid the island of feral scum.
spikes on the walls that reach out and impale anyone would be more entertaining to watch
It must be a weak point of entry into the bank. I expect they are worried some kids might break in and lift the 2 ton safe back up through the roof before scarpering off to Church Litten with it.
It’s not like the bank can’t afford a brown envelope to make sure they get what they want.
I wouldn’t bother ,let them fall, that may deter other idiots????.
Failing that I agree with electrifying them ….
Could they also use the special anti climb grease ???
I can see what hsbc is doing if they cant get the spikes they will have to leave the Island giving the excuse its not safe here anymore
Some people on here really need therapy. Electrify them, impale them another cries followed by feral scum. Talk about anger issues. For what? A couple of kids who climb on a roof. I’d hate to be around for people you actually know.
So you would be happy to have no rules or consequences for trespass (which is what the kids are doing) then. We have already seen an increase in crime due to our softly softly approach, and look where society is now. Rather than spikes, is the roof overlooked by another building that could install CCTV. Then there is evidence to take to court, fine the culprits or parents thereof, and publicly shame them. Much more humiliating than spikes in my opinion.
Look out another do gooder not affected by the problem who will stop it happening
