More than £270 was given to the family of Phil Selby at a special memorial event on Saturday (18th July) at Smallbrook.
Phil, who recently passed away, was a long-serving firefighter on the Island but was also a member of the Isle of Wight Hockey Club, playing in hundreds of games over the years.
A mini-interclub tournament was held between four mixed teams, one of which included Phil’s daughter, Rachel, who played on the day. Rather than paying a match fee, members donated money to a collection, and the club also included the Smallbrook pitch hire fee, which was waived by Ryde School as part of the event.
The games were 20 minutes long and each team played in a round-robin format. After all the games, the side of Colin Simmonds, Tom Butt, Tom Young, Jason Heaven-Gandy, Simon Butler, Shannon Stannett and Leigh Crouch won all their games and were presented with the Phil Selby Memorial Trophy and medals. The trophy was donated by the Selby family.
The £270 raised on the day was given to Rachel Selby (pictured holding the trophy) who will donate the money to the family’s chosen charities including Cancer Research UK.
Chairman Harry Kirby said:
“The day was a very fitting occasion for a long-serving member who will be sadly missed. It was played in a superb spirit with members from all sections of the club.
“It was wonderful to see Phil’s daughter Rachel take part and we are so pleased we were able to present her with the money for good causes. The family will also look after the trophy until next year, as we will make this an annual occasion and are hoping the Phil Selby Memorial Day will continue to grow in the coming years.”
