People eligible for this year’s spring COVID-19 vaccination are being reminded that there is still time to come forward and boost their protection.
More than 173,000 eligible people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have already received their spring vaccination since the programme launched, helping to protect those most at risk of becoming seriously unwell from COVID-19.
This number equates to about 57% meaning, just under half of those eligible are yet to come forward before the campaign ends on 30th June.
Those eligible are people aged 75 and over, care home residents, and those who have an increased risk of getting seriously ill due to having a weakened immune system.
Dr Charlotte Hutchings, GP and Clinical Director for NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight, said:
“Thank you to those of you who have come forward to have their spring COVID-19 vaccination.
“Our campaign continues until 30th June, and the last date to book into a slot is 29th June, so there is still some time yet to have your vaccination if you are eligible.
“It does take about one-to-two weeks for the COVID-19 vaccination to become active, so the sooner you get it the better. The vaccine provides protection that lasts for some months, so we recommend people take up the offer of seasonal boosters to improve their immunity.”
Our vaccination programmes support the ambitions set out in the national 10 Year Health Plan, which places a greater emphasis on prevention and helping people stay healthy for longer. By protecting those most at risk from serious illness and reducing the likelihood of hospital admission, vaccination helps people maintain their independence while easing pressure on NHS services.
Dr Hutchings added:
“Preventing illness before it becomes serious is a key part of the national 10 Year Health Plan. Vaccinations remain one of the most effective ways we can help people stay well, avoid hospital treatment and live independently for longer.”
Anyone unsure whether they are eligible for a vaccination, or who needs support with booking an appointment, can contact the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight COVID Vaccination Helpline on 0300 561 0018, Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 16:00.
Further information about COVID-19 vaccinations, including eligibility criteria and booking options, is available through the NHS website and NHS App.
The next phase of the COVID-19 vaccination programme is expected to take place in the autumn, with eligibility to be confirmed following national guidance.
The success of programmes like vaccination shows the difference that proactive, community-based healthcare can make. As we continue to develop neighbourhood health services and deliver the ambitions of the 10 Year Health Plan, we want to hear your views on what would make the biggest difference in your local area.
Please take part in our summer engagement survey and help shape how health and care services can support people to stay healthy, independent and well for longer.
