A multi-million-pound McDonald’s drive thru scheme has been refused by Isle of Wight councillors last night (Tuesday).
The planning committee’s unanimous vote comes after council officers advised the development next to Three Gates Road in Cowes be rejected, warning the proposal fails to show how it would prevent ill-health in the community.
Six Reform UK councillors, three independents, one Liberal Democrat and a Conservative sit on the panel.
County Hall received 186 representations from members of the public objecting to the plans and 138 letters in support.
There have also been several petitions opposing the McDonald’s, with one signed by 361 people, another with 1,788 digital signatures and a further appeal signed by 141 individuals.
Arguments in favour of the plan included job creation, greater choice of convenience food, the restaurant being cheap for families on low income, business rates revenue and the project’s ‘sustainable design’.
Increased noise and disturbance, health concerns over fast food, harm to habitats and wildlife, light pollution, anti-social behaviour, odour, late-night activity, litter, and jobs being part-time and low paid were among points raised by opponents.

I am glad it has been rejected
Why really need one in cowes
Great news for all concerned, especially the residents of Three Gates Road. You also wouldn’t want your children working here. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq6jn883vyeo
“Cheap for families on low income”, so, targeting those with low quality substances labelled food.
Perhaps they might all close to reduce the health risks.
McD’s is no longer that cheap & the lat time I went to Newport MDs the burger was hardly edible in a soggy bun & if you tried to live on their products for a month you would end up in an ICU. Someone tried it & that was the result.
This will undoubtedly be appealed by mcdonalds and the council will not have a leg to stand on when council for mcdonalds ask one question, how many takeaways on the island have been refused in the last 12 months on the grounds of preventing ill health in the community, when the answer comes back and it will as zero then the applicants will just say, case proved and costs against the council will be six figures.
Yet vape shopes pos open up and drug fronts dressesed as barbers pop up everywhere.
Unquestionably the correct decision. Three Gates Road is totally unsuitable for this proposal. Hopefully this will be the end of the matter, but I fear McD’s will keep nibbling away!
Brilliant decision. It’s a race to the bottom when the biggest argument is ‘here’s your cheap food and the all the employment you’re worth’.
No. People deserve better.
Good at last something done right.
They will appeal, the council will not be able to afford to fight it.
It will be built.
Great news and the correct decision.
Appeal incoming. Mainland planners will overturn this decision. It will go ahead if maybe slightly delayed.
I read recently that one of the island MPs owns a fish and chip
shop in Cowes.
Maybe he thinks this new PLAICE, will steal some of his custom
hence it’s a no no!
“All seems a bit fishy too me”
Why batter McDonald’s give the working classes what they want
“Choices and Cheap Food”
Lol
The ill health bit a bit shite but it’s on a corner opposite homes so will be traffic accidents burnouts leaving rubbish thrown out of windows..the smell of the crap ..you say low income a lot on more in benefits than some hard working families..
Thank goodness the Councillors had the sense to turn down this Planning Application for another disgusting fast food outlet by Mc Donald’s, I trust when McDonalds appeals the decision it is again turned down on how the road will cause traffic carnage, disgusting litter, rat problem from rubbish etc etc.
I think the people of Cowes who voted against this and people in favour of the rejection in the comments, need to have their brains checked. Cowes is dying! Businesses are struggling. No reason for people to come into Cowes. Investment in an area has more positives than negatives. Especially if it brings people to area! Fast forward 20 years when all the old farts against this proposal have died. The younger generation will move away from Cowes because the area has been suffocated by actions of these crazies. How about the council demolish all the houses and create 1 big field for these crazies to live together in tents.
You need help.
Glad to hear Muck Donald’s has been rejected. I agree with other comments that they will likely win on appeal. Business rates are a huge earner for councils. I live about seventy yards from four food sales / take away shops. The verge and frontage of my and my neighbours are continually strewn with half eaten food, which has led to an explosion in the rat population over the years since these establishments opened. Rats / Mice are responsible for some 7% of all fires in buildings annually- google it! They chew the electric wires causing a short circuit often resulting in a fire. They have chewed through the lighting circuit in my house. = No lights, only plug in the wall table lamps. If Mucky D’s win on appeal, or you have a rat problem I personally recommend spring traps for inside your property and poison bait left in the unopened bags placed outside under cover such as motor vehicles. Do not use poison inside your house! The rats will eat it, and crawl off, die and rot behind your built in furniture eg kitchen etc. = horrible stench as they decompose and are consumed by maggots! Good luck!
