Young Isle of Wight archer Summer Chambers has shown remarkable determination after returning to competition just days after a cycling accident left her needing hospital treatment – helping Hampshire secure a team bronze medal despite her injuries.
15-year-old Summer was forced to spend an evening in A&E last week after coming off her bike, suffering injuries to both hands and her bow arm ahead of a busy week of competition.
Rather than withdrawing, the talented young archer sought help from coach Martin Oakley, who worked with her to adapt her equipment so she could continue shooting comfortably. The solution included wearing a golf glove on her bow hand with a support plaster underneath to cushion the injury, along with additional protection beneath her arm guard.
Despite the setback, Summer took to the shooting line on Sunday at the Southern Counties Archery Society (SCAS) Inter-Counties tournament, representing Hampshire Under-18s.
The injury took its toll throughout the competition, with Summer later admitting it affected both her confidence and the feel of her shooting. She finished with a score of 561 out of 720 – below the high standards she sets herself.
However, there was still success to celebrate.
Teaming up with fellow Hampshire archer Alex Levey in the team matches, the pair battled their way to a bronze medal finish.
Reflecting on the competition, Summer said:
“Not every competition goes to plan, but setbacks are part of sport.
“Time to focus on recovery, keep working hard, and come back stronger.”
