An historic 120-year-old yacht that has served in some of the biggest battles of the 20th Century, is set to go on sale later this month.
‘Caretta’ was launched from Devonport Dockyard in 1898 and just a year later was taken to South Africa to help patrol the rivers and protect British ships during the second Boer War.
In 1915 the boat was used to transport troops to the Dardanelles, and was fitted with a Maxim machine gun to give her a higher rate of fire power and allow her to cover troops landing on the beaches at Gallipoli.
The Admiralty Pinnace boat, now the last boat of its kind, was also in service during the Second World War, seized by the admiralty for use in Dunkirk for Operation Dynamo – portrayed recently in the film ‘Dunkirk’ – with her masts removed to ensure extra room for transporting troops back from France.
Joshua Heeley is helping to sell the boat and said:
“Never before has a boat fought so many battles and lived to tell the tale. This isn’t just a yacht, but a piece of history, and is now the last remaining boat of its kind. We are so excited to have heard some of this boat’s story, and it now has a chance to make new stories with a new owner.”
Due to her damaged engine and lack of spares, ‘Caretta’ was taken out of commission for the rest of the War. In 1969 she was sold to her second owner, before being sold again in 2002 for £140,000. Her current owner has completely restored the boat to as close to her original design as possible, as previously reported by Island Echo.
The boat afloat in Island Harbour on the Isle of Wight awaiting sale.
The auction of the yacht will take place on 24th June, with more information available at Unique Auctions https://www.unique-auctions.com/archives/34132 or Waypoint Yacht Brokers’ website https://www.waypoint-yachtbrokers.co.uk/boat_for_sale/1582245/.
