Age UK Isle of Wight welcomed High Sheriff Nigel Hartley to its April Chatty Brew at Thompson’s Garden Centre last week, where he met attendees and spoke about his new campaign, My Life. My Death. My Plan.
The visit gave older Islanders the chance to hear directly from the High Sheriff about the campaign and the importance of helping people in later life feel informed, prepared and involved in conversations about planning ahead.
Also in attendance were Age UK Isle of Wight President Nick Hayward, Chair of Trustees Lorraine Buckman and Vice Chair of Trustees Martin Bostock, reflecting the charity’s support for the visit and the important conversations it helped create.
Age UK Isle of Wight is proud to be partnering with High Sheriff Nigel Hartley to help spread the word about the campaign and support as many people as possible across the Island.
Speaking during the event, High Sheriff Nigel Hartley said:
“It’s been incredibly lively, full of lots and lots of conversation and lots of tea.”
He added:
“We’ve been talking about the High Sheriff campaign ‘My Life. My Death. My Plan.’ making sure people at the end of life and old age have their house in order and plans in place.”
He also said:
“We’re looking at ways in getting more of older people especially those here at Chatty Brew involved to make sure we are doing the right thing for them and the right thing for the whole Island.”
For Age UK Isle of Wight, the visit was a valuable opportunity to bring an important Island-wide conversation directly into a trusted community setting, where older people could engage with it in a warm, friendly and informal environment.
The April Chatty Brew, held at Thompson’s Garden Centre, saw a fantastic turnout of more than 60 people, reflecting the strength of interest not only in the social side of the event, but also in the issues being discussed.
Chatty Brew is one of the ways Age UK Isle of Wight helps older people stay connected to their community, while also creating opportunities to share information, raise awareness and open meaningful conversations around later life.
A video from the day will also be released soon, giving people the chance to see more from High Sheriff Nigel Hartley’s visit and hear more about the campaign and partnership.
Joe Hodgkinson, Marketing and Digital Communications Officer at Age UK Isle of Wight, said:
“We were delighted to welcome High Sheriff Nigel Hartley to our April Chatty Brew and to give people the chance to hear more about this important campaign in such a friendly and accessible setting. It was a great opportunity to connect older Islanders with a conversation that really matters, while also listening to their views and experiences.”
Events like Chatty Brew would not be possible without the support of volunteers, and Age UK Isle of Wight is currently looking for more people who are willing to get involved and help.
