Thousands of students across the Isle of Wight will not be taking their exams this summer with confirmation from the Government that GCSEs and A-Levels have been cancelled for 2021.
For the second year in a row, examinations have been cancelled meaning another year group will face predicted grade results. However, the Government is yet to lay out a definitive plan for how the Island’s students will be graded.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the news, which will be sure to disappoint many children and parents, whilst addressing the nation to announce a third national lockdown tonight (Monday).
He said:
“It is not possible or fair for all exams to go ahead as normal. Alternative arrangements will be put in place.”
More information is expected in the coming days, but alternative arrangements are likely to be similar to those seen in 2020.

Terrible for the students at a time when jobs will be very scarce. At least this years group KNOW their work will be used to give them grades, whereas last years group didn’t so may not have put in as much revision for the mocks etc,.
A most unfortunate time to be young, with worry that your family could become ill or worse, poor education, limited venues for having fun, fewer jobs, yet ever more people filling the UK adding to the pressures of finding a job or a home.
It stops when we do not give our consent ! They are lying…
I wish you would stop. What is your endgame? You come out with all this rubbish but don’t offer any solution other than laying down and surrendering. I myself will fight and do what I can to keep my family and friends safe so we can meet again when it’s over. A very small sacrifice.
Can’t you see it will never be over
Will you give all your liberties away on the pretext of a nasty virus…
Yes obviously, all schools will be shut for good in time, they don’t want the peasants to have an education as knowledge is power. We are going back to Victorian times, next will be no vaccine no health care at all
If you study the history of the Victorian period you will see that it was a time when improvements in medicine, health care, education, public health, prisons, etc etc were very much undertaken by Government, public bodies and community leaders.
I appreciate some children will be very unhappy and thrive with exams and for those kids this is bad news.
However, my son is in year 11 and is dyslexic. From 8am last night it feels like a cloud has been lifted, he was feeling so overwhelmed with the volume of material he was being asked to catch up on and he had completely shut off.
This morning he is up, completely ready to do online learning and feels that, whilst he knows he still has to work hard to evidence his knowledge, the exams being cancelled has stopped the crippling stress and pressure.
Hi Emma. I understand what your son is going throw. I am dyslexic and went throw the education system in the 70’s. I left school at 15 illiterate. I did not start to learn until I left school. I found higher education much easier and suited how my brain works. Also all the people that were there, were there because they wanted to be. I now have a degree in IT and I am studying for my Masters. As a software engineer of over 25 years I have found that my dyslexic gives me an advantage in computing. If you son likes computers then I would encourage it. Please check out the raspberry pi foundation’s website. They have everything he would need.
