2 flood alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency following a night of heavy rainfall across the Isle of Wight last night (Monday).
The first alert, for Gurnard Luck, has been brought into force after around 25mm of rain fell in the space of just 3 hours. Due to the incoming tide at Cowes, it’s thought that the water level in Gurnard Luck could become high enough to cause flooding to gardens located immediately next to the river in Marsh Road, Gurnard.
The Environment Agency said:
“The water level in the Gurnard Luck is high and rising. Overnight, 25mm of rain was recorded in Cowes. Most of the rain fell in 3 hours, which is a large amount in a short period of time.
“High tide at Cowes is expected at 11:00 this morning (Tuesday). From 1pm, the water level could become high enough to cause garden flooding to properties located immediately next to the river in Marsh Road (Gurnard). The weather will remain settled and dry over the next 5 days.
“The river will rise until 14:00 this afternoon. It will then begin to drain with the lowering tide. From 16:00 onwards, no further impacts are expected from the river. We continue to monitor the forecast, and will remove any reported blockages.
“Until the level falls with the lowering tide, please keep away from the river at Gurnard Road Bridge.
“Water will be deep and fast flowing. This flood alert will be removed by 18:00.”
Elsewhere, an alert has also been issued for the Eastern Yar. The Environment Agency has issued the alert – which is expected to last until 23:00 – as water levels rise following the heavy rain.
The Environment Agency said:
“From 11:00 this morning (Tuesday) the water level will become noticeably high at Alverstone, rising near to the top of the river bank.
“Some field flooding may occur at Langbridge. We do not expect access issues at Horringford. Property flooding is not expected.
“Later this evening (around 21:00) it is possible that minor impact flooding will occur at Golf Links Road.”

That comment is upsetting, do you think people want to have flood water in their homes, memories lost, can’t live in their own homes for months on end, trying to keep body and soul together, and your answer is ” you’ll get a new kitchen etc in time for Christmas” I hope you never have flood water in your house.
“I hope you never have flood water in your house”,
