The Environment Agency has issued an immediate flood alert for the St John’s area of Ryde, Lukely Brook at Carisbrooke and the River Medina in Newport this morning (Sunday) following a night of heavy and intense rain, with 24mm recorded in just 10 hours.
It’s said that the water level in the Monktonmead Brook at St John’s Railway Station is high and rising.
From 07:30 this morning, water will begin to flow across the railway tracks, upstream of St John’s Station. This is likely to result in the suspicion of Island Line trains and could impact surrounding homes and businesses.
With rain set to continue to affect the area over the next 6 hours, with a further 10mm of rain expected on top of the 24mm recorded at Ryde in the past 10 hours, water levels are unlikely to fall until 10:00.
Locals are being told to consider moving vehicles from depots located next to the river and railway line.
In Carisbrooke, 24mm of rain has also been recorded resulting in the Lukely Brook being near to bank full.
From 06:30, flooding may affect land at Vicarage Walk, Old Westminster Lane and Hunnycross Way, although the Environment Agency is not expecting impacts from the river at Carisbrooke.
It’s said that a more serious flood warning may be issued in the next couple of hours, for the onset of property flooding, if river levels continue to rise as a result of further rainfall.
Residents living near the tover are encouraged to take action to protect their property.
A flood alert has also been issued for the River Medina.
Out of bank flooding will now start to affect land, gardens and possibly roads at Blackwater, especially at Blackwater Hollow near Mill Farm and at Sandy Lane. Then, at 07:00, the river will become very high at St George’s Way, Shide.
Water levels are unlikely to fall until 13:00, with the possibility of a flood warning being issued for the area for the onset of property flooding from the river within the next 2 hours.
UPDATE @ 07:27 – A flood alert has also now been issued for the Eastern Yar, which is high and rising.
In the last 12 hours, a staggering 32mm of rainfall has been recorded at Wroxall.
The Environment Agency says that in the next 8 hours, water will be ponded on low lying land adjacent to the river throughout the river valley. Road, cycle track and footpath flooding is expected – Southford Lane in Whitwell is already impassable.
At Langbridge and Alverstone Road Bridge, the river will be close to the top of the river bank. Property flooding is not currently expected but Flooding of Golf Links Road and Moreton Common Road, Sandown may occur from early Monday morning.
Ditches around Fort Holiday Park will struggle to drain while river levels are high.
At Alverstone, the river will rise until approximately 17:00 this afternoon. At Sandown, levels will not peak until Monday morning.
A yellow weather warning remains in force, with IW Met Service recording 39.8mm of rainfall to date against a prediction of 40mm.

It never rains but it pours.
Question – What has been done since the last time people had their properties ruined by flooding in these areas, in the way of prevention of it happening again?
Answer – Sod all has been done becase those who are responsible for avoiding flooding in these areas, are not affected by any flooding in these areas. If there are failiers again by those who could prevent the problem by open flood gates etc,. they should be held to account.
No one seems to do anything about flooding
issues, building more properties on the island
won’t help the cause.
