Firefighters are battling a garden fire at a residential property in Whitwell this morning (Friday).
1 appliance from the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance on Kemming Road, where several metres of undergrowth have caught alight.
A retained crew from Shanklin are using hose reel jets and a hydrant to battle the flames and wet the surrounding areas to prevent any further spread.
UPDATED @ 12:20 – Firefighters have extinguished an area of undergrowth and bamboo measuring 5 metres by 5 metres. It’s thought that the fire was sparked by a discarded glass bottle.
It comes as warmer and dryer weather across the Island prompts warnings of the potential for fires outside as residents start to have bonfires and use barbecues and fire pits.
Shanklin firefighters, who attended an incident with a similar source of ignition yesterday, are also warning about the dangers of discarded bottles in the countryside and overgrown areas.
