Firefighters from Ryde have extinguished a small hedge fire in the town this afternoon (Sunday), promptly a timely reminder to take extra precautions during hot and dry weather.
One pumping appliance was mobilised to Station Road near the junction with Queens Road at 16:25 when a hedge caught fire, thought to have been caused by BBQ ashes.
The single crew have now extinguished the fire using a hose reel and have returned to station.
With forecasters anticipating an extremely hot Summer ahead – possibly one of the hottest in recent years – Island residents are reminded of the following fire safety messages to keep yourself, others and the Island’s wildlife and countryside safe.
• Be careful not to drop any matchs/cigarettes in the countryside or out of car windows – dispose of cigarettes and matches carefully and responsibly
• Do not leave any fires unattended and make sure that all fires are fully extinguished after use
• Do not leave bottles/glass behind as sunlight shining through glass can start a fire
• Never leave a barbecue unattended and take care when disposing of the ashes
• Never use a barbecue indoors and use away from sheds, fences, trees, shrubs and garden waste
• Always keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies
