Time is running out for Isle of Wight groups to apply for a grant from Wightlink’s Green Innovation Fund to help make the Island more sustainable. The deadline will be midnight Sunday 31st March 2024. This is an opportunity for groups of Islanders to make a real difference in their community by coming up with a good idea for sustainable and environmentally friendly projects that will help cut carbon emissions and reduce our use of fossil fuels. Wightlink has a £10,000 fund to share between the best applications. Wightlink Chief Executive Keith Greenfield
“The Green Innovation Fund is all about empowering and supporting Island communities to push boundaries and advance towards a more sustainable future. “Whether you have a ground-breaking idea, a project already in progress, or a desire to make a difference, we want to hear from you. “Together, we can make a meaningful impact. The Wightlink Green Innovation Fund is not just a financial grant—it’s a commitment to our shared future.”
Wightlink is already a leader in combating climate change. The ferry company already operates England’s first hybrid energy ship, Victoria of Wight. It is installing solar panels to generate electricity from sunshine and continually strives to increase recycling rates. What is Wightlink looking for?
- Projects that bring people together to make a positive impact on the environment.
- Applications which include both immediate and long-term commitments to create a more sustainable Isle of Wight.
- Projects that use technology to improve energy efficiency or encourage more people to conserve energy or use less of it.
- Original thinking; something innovative. Maybe your idea is something that’s never been done on the Isle of Wight?
- Projects that lead the way for others. Will it inspire other people to follow your lead, so there’s a wider benefit to the Island?

A shared pedestrian/cyclist path from Westridge to Brading, less bicycles on the road, and therefore, less emissions, safer opportunity for people to walk between Ryde and Sandown
walk between Ryde and Sandown
most don’t walk between ryde town and ryde seafront
I beg for any safe space on Staplers Road.
There’s no pavement there, and walking and cycling with cars going 40mph and often more is just scary, cars almost never slow down for you.
Even crossing a road near Monkey Haven to reach a bus stop on slippery piece of grass is a gamble.
I have poor eyesight and can’t drive but I still want to go places without risking death :(((
No chance of that. Be lucky if they maintain the existing ones in good order.
” less bicycles on the road, and therefore, less emissions” … cycle 100 miles = no emissions, drive any distance = emissions…. so, more bicycles = less emissions, simple equation.
I mean, on the cycle path as opposed to on the road, better traffic flow for motorized vehicles.
Cyclists don’t use the cycle lanes they currently have.
Did not ivyserel suggest that by using the railroad?
Stop building on the green spaces for a start, limit cars coming over here during summer months, but we won’t be listened to anyway.
If you want to limit cars, invest in walking, cycling, train and bus infrastructure.
What are you on …
YES – NO BUILDING AT ALL ON GREEN LAND. COMPULSORY SOLAR PV PANELS ON EVERY NEW BUILD.
SIMPLES
Make all new builds to Passivhaus standards. No agreement, no planning permission. Retro fit as many buildings as possible with solar. Harness tidal energy.
Passivhaus buildings are highly prone to overheating in the summer. Would have been horrendous in the summer of 2022 and we can expect more summers like that under future climate scenarios. Using phase change materials in walls is effective for releasing excess heat in the summer and retaining heat in the winter. They have also been integrated with solar in several Chinese cities. Sterilized lard was shown to be a highly effective and natural phase change material for use in wall cavities.
However, Wightlink are just handing out a few quid for small scale projects rather than waving a magic wand.
Hope I am not missing something, but surely Passivhaus houses with solar PV can run aircon in the summer with no greenhouse emissions ??
Air conditioning is contrary to the design principles of a Passivhaus. If you install air conditioning and heating, you do not have a Passivhaus; otherwise, not a problem. Combinations of various techniques can be used but phase change materials in walls are very promising.
We don’t …netzero bollocks.
The flooding we’ve seen this winter, just the start of it all. Going to get worse.
Personally, I’d rather have lower ferry fares.
There’s a list of over a hundred recipients of sponsorship from Wightlink on their website, including everything from petanque players to sports clubs to an orchestra.
I’m sure those people and clubs etc appreciate it, but from a personal point of view I’d rather I decided whether to support a particular person or charity and not have to pay extra for a ferry company to decide on my behalf.
Island residents discounts would be lovely
Great idea
Ban cars … just ban cars
best idea on here and it gets the old thumbs down… no surprises ; )
Like there are not much more important things for the island to tackle first, like criminals walking free for almost any crime, homelessness of islanders, our hospital on it’s knees, our elderly to afraid to put the heating on, roads collapsing, innapropriate affordable housing getting through planning. I could go on for about an hour I reckon. Being green is the last thing to be worried about right now and in any event, someone switching a smart lightbulb on is not going to offset even a miniscual fraction of the trillions of tons of poisons that China and India pump into the atmosphere on a daily basis. Get a grip!
What is more important than preventing the end of much of the life on Earth?
A fixed rail link, much easier and cheaper to build and will have the greatest benefit for islanders. And will still give the ferries companies something to do whilst keeping the boomers happy with their illogical fear of a gypo invasion. And then invest in public transport and a police force to deal with all the diesel cars that have modified so they belch out tones of toxic smoke.
Plant more grass. Plant more trees.
I would ban bonfires and wood burners!
Ban all stinking wood burning stoves.
People don’t burn the correct wood in them.
Heating by burning a wood fire increases your chance of lung cancer by 50%. Living in an area where people burn wood increases your chances of all cancers by 150%. Who in their right mind thinks that burning wood is wise? It is the worst form of heating for the environment in terms of carbon release and it fills the air with particulates that cause respiratory diseases as well as cancer.
Anything that doesnt cost us MORE money.
How about getting rid of those gas guzzling 4x4s monster sized cars. They are in the main totally unnecessary for Island driving. When they park at the side of the road they close one of the carriageways, this makes traffic come to a halt, ticking over at a standstill, throwing out pollution. Maybe someone on here who drives those monsters can tell us why?
