Townsfolk turned out in their thousands for Newport’s festive Christmas Carnival on a frosty Saturday evening (2nd December). The carnival procession took a short route along South Street, going up through Pyle Street before turning back down the High Street and finishing at the Quay. Musical accompaniment for the procession was led by Medina Marching Band with Vectis Corps of Drums positioning themselves in the middle. Major Island Towns were represented by their floats, with Newport’s playing A Fairytale of New York in tribute in the High Street to the late Pogues singer, Shane MacGowan. Father Christmas paid a visit within Roundtables’ Santas Sleigh. Isle of Wight Young Farmers were represented with 14 of their tractors participating in the parade. Bringing up the rear, something not so familiar for Newport was two horses wearing tinsel and Christmas lights. A traction engine also took part in the parade. Other carnival committees also supported Newport from Sandown, Ventnor and Ryde. There were also lantern parades by local schools and groups to bring festive cheer to town along with many dressing up. It was also noted that there were several police officers present at the Christmas Carnival, which in recent years is a rare sight. Earlier in the day, Scarrots Lane held a Step into Christmas event, featuring food, music and entertainment along the iconic Newport Street. Paddy McHugh, Chairman of Newport Carnival & Community Events Association said:
“It was a remarkable Christmas Carnival and we are so honoured to have been supported by so many people both taking part and lining the streets to cheer us on. “Over the years Newport has put itself on the map for their parades, and I can only thank my amazing team of volunteers, like myself, who spend loads of time into making the carnival scene what it is. “We hope to see you all at the two remaining Christmas Carnivals”
The next Christmas Carnival on the Island is Merry & Bright in Ryde on Friday 8th December from 18:00.
