Cowes RNLI lifeboat was involved in 2 late-night incidents on the River Medina yesterday (Sunday) – the last night of the Isle of Wight Festival.
The 1st incident was when at 23:10, while on exercise on the river, the lifeboat crew saw a man diving into very shallow water close to Newport Rowing Club. But on investigation he was found to be absolutely fine.
Then, at 23:45, just when the crew was preparing to go home, they rushed to Newport Quay, where 2 rigid inflatable boats had collided with a loud bang.
On arrival the lifeboat crew discovered that the inflatable sponson on one side of the larger craft had been damaged. Also at the scene, playing an active role, were Island teams from HM Coastguard.
At the time of the collision the inflatable was carrying about 10 people and there were fears that the vessel could be swamped. The damaged craft was duly escorted to a pontoon below a house close to the Island Sailing Club at Cowes.
The lifeboat finally returned to station at 01:00 this morning (Monday).

Drunk/Drugs how do two boats collide at speed in River?
D#£knead drivers, that’s how!
Too many old farts on the road and in the sea
I think you’ll find you dont have to be on drink or drugs to crash things… again another judgemental comment based on the hatred you have for drink and drugs rather than look at the cause or even better just let them live. I dont want a dystopian future where we are controlled to the very last calorie. Plus you awnsered your own question, it’s a small river so chances would be more than the Atlantic wouldnt it?
.
Was the loud bang ok after the collision?
Erbalists at the helm
On Exercise ? Is that a way of disguising the waisting fundraisers money. On a jolly to listen to Robbie Williams & have turned a chap cooling off beside his yacht into an incident for their book. I was there & prior to these clowns arrival, the chap & crew mates were enjoying the evening. Once their yacht had floated on the incoming tide, they gathered up their rubbish onboard & took it ashore to the bins provided. After the music had ended, this chap went for a dip alongside his boat. The over Zealous Cowes RNLI put on their Blue flashing light (to make a big deal of nothing) The yachtsman once cooled off, got back onboard & then had a finger wagged at him & told the water was shallow. Hardly an incident was it.
I’d rather them on excerice than sat at the station lol especially at this busy weekend youd be having their guts for garters if they wearnt around to save a life so which is it you want? Your statement is too conspiratorial tbh I mean they are the rlni and the people who work the boats are every day civis who do a mighty fine job
OMG, what sort of person are you to judge the actions of the RNLI who save lives all year round. Have you ever been a volunteer with the RNLI? I can not believe you have suggested that they wasted fundraising money. They need to to practice their skills in all conditions in night or daylight. Unbelievable !!!!!!!
Female drivers again, this time on water.
FACT. I was not judging the RNLI in general, its a fantastic organisation.
FACT I did not agree with the over zealousness of Cowes RNLI. The way that crew approached a chap cooling off beside his boat. Certainly did not require Blue flashing lights or to be mentioned as an incident.
FACT sitting in a boat on the river in the vicinity of the Festival stage is not an Exercise. Although could be classed as a patrol, like the police do.
FACT. Cowes RNLI have not always covered Cowes Firework night, so I would not be jumping up & down if they hadn’t of showed up on Sunday night. As the Folly launch with a very pleasant & helpful skipper is always on hand to help.
