The Isle of Wight Council says it is closely monitoring the situation in Ventnor following last night’s landslip, which has left a garden crumbling high above Zig Zag Road. Aerial photos captured by Island Echo – the 3rd time reporters have deployed this technology to cover a landslide in Ventnor – show how the rear garden of a property on Ocean View Road is barely hanging on. First light revealed the extent of the situation following yesterday’s emergency response, which led to Police closing a number of roads. It has been revealed that the retaining wall behind Tower House failed last month, with designs already being drawn up to repair the situation. However, the land has further slipped before such a repair could be undertaken.
An Isle of Wight spokesperson has said:
“We anticipate that more mud may move today; however, it is unlikely to cause any immediate issues. “Our Council’s Building Control Team will conduct a site visit later today to further assess the area where possible. “Due to the current low level of risk, we will closely monitor the situation, and any changes will be promptly communicated.”
Zig Zag Road remains closed from Bellevue Road to Ocean View Road this lunchtime, with a road closure also in place on nearby Gills Cliff Road due to a rock fall.
