CORONAVIRUS CASES ON THE RISE AGAIN ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT

PAST THE PEAK BUT SPIKE IN LATEST CONFIRMED CORONAVIRUS CASES FIGURE

Another 2 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been identified on the Isle of Wight.

428 cases have been recorded on the Island since the start of the pandemic, with the latest 2 listed as being confirmed on Tuesday this week.

During the month of August so far, a total of 5 new cases have been announced alongside 2 cases towards the end of July. This means that in less than 3 weeks there have been 7 new cases linked to the Isle of Wight.

Article continues below this advertisement

On 2nd July the total number of cases sat at 421, suggesting the Island went without any new cases for a period of at least 25 days before the first of the 7 new cases was identified on 27th July.

7 cases over a 3 week period is still a low number, especially given the Island’s increased population during the summer months. Just 0.30% of the Island’s population (approx. 140,000) has been confirmed as having the virus.

A total of 86 people have died from the virus locally – 0.06% of the population. This represents a mortality rate on the Island of 20% (of known cases).

No surprise, reducing restrictions will increase the spread. It’s not rocket science. Maybe if mask wearing was mandated we could avoid another lock down. Maybe close pubs too, many people getting drunk shouting at each other in close quarters is asking for trouble.

Again, to avoid another lock down everyone needs to play their part. Anyone who does not wish to do so are displaying how selfish they really are. Time to work with your friends, family and neighbourhood. Not against them!

Stop the spread!

What nonsense. Herd immunity is the only way to beat this. Face coverings are a nonsense. Let’s get back to absolute normality (no new normal) whilst protecting the vulnerable. We can’t hide from this thing – take it on the chin.

Erm…these measures are temporary until we get a vaccine. It’s not forever. But go ahead. Don’t wear a mask. Shake everyone by the hand. Sit inside with lots of people. Darwin knows about you.

What nonsense Steve. Herd immunity is very difficult to achieve (Sweden have tried it and failed) and and requires a high percentage of the population to have contracted the disease. This would result in a disaster for the Island given the majority of people fall into the vulnerable group.

The grief of a small white coffin being lowered into the ground is never going to be compensated by knowing seaside outlets have had the best season ever to re-coupe their lost Spring earnings. But then we are not all business owning councillors or tax grabbing Government officials who can both isolate and still gain financially from the ‘relaxed’ new measures in place.

Why is councillors owning businesses such a problem for you people ,jealously perhaps ?

There would be no issues at all IF all such were honest and ‘above board’, but not all are.

Whilst many of us small businesses owners are trying to make a living and have been hit hard. Others have had the advantage of instant inside information on grants, loans, furlough with snouts first in and then never out of the trough, and who then have the audacity to keep several staff off the books thus providing themselves cheap labour as well.

This gives them a clear advantage over us, as we try to compete honestly and run an honest ship in the same vicinity.

Even when public houses were closed and the Government were trying to keep social contact to a minimum ‘some’ were still selling alcohol, thus endangering lives .

This is something one might ‘expect’ from a poor, ignorant of the law trader, not so from a person ‘thought to be’ and who ought to be, a pillar of our society.

IF such bends and flouts laws and rules on private business, then people can’t help imagining what if this goes on in their official capacity, leaving one wondering of what corruption could then occur with our council tax and business tax we pay in good faith entrusting such to these people.

So whilst jealousy is not the reason, common decency and fair play in competitive business certainly is.

Wait until the holiday season is over, then it only take a few infected children returning to school, and we will really see the full effects of Government and Council relaxing of the rules, to keep tills pinging, but at the life of many.

HMG have a difficult task, as they need to keep the fragile economy going, yet have to pretend to care about individual people, who they don’t know, from dying or getting life changing damage from CV. Whereas we just care about our loved ones staying healthy.

So what HMG think is best for the country, may not be the best for us individually.

The grief of a small white coffin being lowered into the ground is to most of us, never going to be compensated by knowing seaside outlets have had the best season ever to re-coupe their lost Spring earnings. But then we are not all business owning councillors or tax grabbing Government officials who can both isolate and still gain from the ‘relaxed’ new measures in place.

Stay safe and do what YOU think is best to achieve that end.

Oh what a surprise that the number of confirmed cases has gone up. It all seems to have increased since the holiday makers have come over from the mainland, the island was clear for nearly a month prior to holiday makers flocking down here. Do they actually do any good?? I have my doubts!!!

Common sense has departed entirely! It’s hard but if possible reduce your personal risk and thank the ignorantly in denial types for spreading CV19.

No social distancing in pubs and eateries, so close them now before the schools go back. It’s not going to go down, not now all the damn holidaymakers are bringing it down from places up north. Sick and tired of hearing “oh i’m down from leicester” or “Just got back from france”

Admittedly, we are still a low risk area.

Just 0.30% of the Island’s population has been confirmed as having the virus.

What is does not show is how many people on the Island HAVE the virus as few people are being tested.
Why so few? Probably because they are not showing any signs of the virus, or mild symptoms and not able to claim sick pay.

More details would be good. Are they young, old, are they island residents, have they been abroad to the mainland or further or not travelled at all, are they in hospital here or elsewhere or shielding? Where have they been recently, Ryde, Newport, Freshwater?
Were these new cases all from the same area or spread elsewhere?
can “anyone” answer all these unanswered questions otherwise we are all in the dark.

The app is useless with all the visitors here who can’t access it or we don’t know if they’ve had or got it cos they’re not part of the “trial”. And it would just say we’re low risk as a whole for the island so complete waste of time.

Mrs brown Phil hasn’t the intelligence to research for himself, as he needs someone to tell him what to do! I have a brother in nz and he said what’s happening in the U.K. is exactly what’s happening there, so this is a global take over. Shut down Auckland for 1 person in hospital. Why can’t the sheep see this, 63,000 people die on our roads every year, and we have 3 die today of the bs kung flu,and it’s the end of the world.

Where I agree with you that the risk of death from Covid is low and too much emphasis is probably placed on it try not to under-play the seriousness of the disease and widen the perspective. Covid exists and a vaccine for it does not. It is highly transmittable and where some people are asymptomatic it has the potential to make people very ill with symptoms lasting for weeks or months. It is not all about death.

Bob, if you know anything you would be aware that this is a new strain of the virus (Novo) identified last year (hence the ‘19’). Currently over 20m recorded cases worldwide so unless you have evidence that the whole world is lying then I suggest you keep quiet on your unfounded conspiracy theories.

No tourists or not as many Jean. Our busy holiday season tends to be the summer due to the weather.

In March when virus landed we had lots of international air travel including ski holidays returning back to the Isle of Wight from highly infectious Italy. (School ski trips and family trips.)

We have very much less international air travel now so our highest risks are from fellow UK citizens visiting the island and workers travelling back and forth.

I hope this answers your question Jean.

I think you’re forgetting that in March at the start of lockdown every single DFL and second home owner for some reason thought that coming over to the Island was essential travel !!! Bringing with them all their germs…roll on September when we might get our Island back to some sort of normality….(In our household as well as the term DFL’s we also use DRT’s -disease ridden tourists!!)

Very true. We are classed as low risk so here they all come. Then they get stroppy when we blame them. Funny how we did ok until they all started coming over. Common sense says when we were locked down with minimal ferries for essential travel only it was very low here now anyone can come no checks anywhere and it’s back. And when September comes and they’ve all gone home our island will be dealing with the aftermath.,particularly our older population. Thank you iw council and whoever else promotes the island to make shed loads of money. I get we need to open things for the economy and jobs etc but it’s madness out there.

So easy for the ferry companies to refuse travel for people booking from midlands hotspots. Why is our government and local council being so stupid in not insisting that the ferry companies take some responsibility for their gross negligence?

paul – you are an idiot. The isle of wight is part of the UK and as such no border controls are required. A person is not required to indicate where they have come from when they travel from london to portsmouth, so why should someone be expected to provide proof if they travel further to the island.

the ferry companies are not responsible for imposing geographical discrimination against their customers.

the better solution is to let the virus run its course, those that are so worried can hide indoors if they wish whilst the rest of us get on with our lives.

Both car ferry companies require your address when you book a crossing. So in the majority of cases they know where you are travelling from. As it stands you can travel from a lockdown hotspot to the Island without challenge or travel refusal. Why? Senseless like the removal of in car travel which is far far safer. Many reports of rammed ferries with no social distancing – the prospect of Covid transmission on hand rails, toilets, and in saloons with lingering virus etc. is obvious.

The ferry companies do have responsibility as do the Government via the failing track and trace system. Its all a mess as we see with the new Island outbreak.

Do you really mean let the virus run its course? You’ve obviously not seen anyone really ill with this terrible disease or noticed what’s happening in North and South America.

Stop calling people idiots – its childish.

Swiip – plenty of idiotic comments on this board from idiots who are pandering to the dressed up news they read.

the ferry companies have no more responsibility than a shopkeeper on the island does..perhaps they should refuse to serve someone with a dodgy northern accent.

passenger ferries do not require you to provide an address – the trains do not require you to provide an address and car passengers are not required to provide an address and quite often the address given will be false as people don’t want the ferry company knowing where they live.

it has already been proven that more people have died of flu and pneumonia than covid …and yet no panic about that. idiots

Everyone needs to remember how the Conservative IW Council have behaved throughout this pandemic when the next General Election comes around and we are standing in that voting booth with the choices of parties in front of us. Boris J and his cronies have bumbled and been so weak and indesisive throughout the whole of this difficult time. We need strong, desisive government who’s not affraid to make new rules that everyone must adhere to. Who makes the correct decisions early enough to save human lives. Everyone knew the infection rate would increase once people from the mainland arrived here but you can’t just blame tourists, there are enough ignorant, selfish individuals who live here and don’t give a damm about social distancing and face coverings and keeping good hand hygiene. Let’s hope we have no more deaths here

with a mortality rate of 20% which is 5 to 6 times higher than USA, Brazil and 10 times higher than India and 33% higher than France, then perhaps all holiday makers should isolate for 14 days upon departing the island, and better still isolate for 14 days upon arrival on the island

Mortality rate of those TESTED. Not infected. Only those admitted to hospital ( therefore already seriously ill) were tested in the first few weeks. Most people who have been infected never had the chance to get tested it’s only recently it’s become available to all if showing symptoms. and the infection rate had dropped dramatically so until we get a few hundred more testing positive with more statistically relevant mortality rate it will appear to remain high.

steve …the mortality rate is based on known cases and as testing is much higher in the USA etc, their mortality rate will be lower, based on the larger number of known cases, when expressed as a percentage.

if the entire isle of wight population was tested, then that mortality rate would be significantly lower.

The only FACTS on stats are, half of those being taking in to St Mary’s hospital here never came out alive.

Fifty-fifty, toss a coin odds, should you be admitted for CV.

Hardly comforting.

IF too many are infected needing hospital care, then those who cannot be taken in will cause even this dire percentage of deaths to rise.

Schooling returning will be the catalyst, and once the main holiday season ends, and the cash drain is not so great, testing will return. It has been ‘put on hold’ so as not to scare away people, aka purses and wallets from our shores.

Unfortunately COVID-19 exists and there has to be a balance between safety and economics , also unfortunately the island is no different from anywhere else in that it has its fair share of ignorant selfish people who couldn’t care less about their fellow man and will blatantly ignore safety protocols . Obviously cases have risen during the holiday period and in reality you can’t shut off the island and livelihoods are genuinely at risk . Hopefully come September we will get the virus under control again . My only complaint is why the ferry companies made people come out of the safety of their vehicles and have to congregate inside the ferry ! Very very stupid !

Testing now on the holiday isle would scare off tourists, so it is being put on hold until after the main cash fleecing season is almost over.

Too many have a vested business interest in our council to frighten people, or more correctly, their wallet contents away until the main income has departed naturally.

Fully agree Horseface. As posts relating to this issue have already been taken down this morning, clearly hit a raw nerve with someone.

I suppose such leave the chamber when anything relating to conflicts of interest on Cllr owned businesses are ‘discussed’, but as we all know, they are as thick as thieves, so their presence and ‘choice’ of voting will still be going the way they wish, with our without them physically being there.

With the modern government testing the numbers will be lower. They don’t need you to go to the testing station, they will estimate your chances using the same algorithm they used for the exam results.
