The Cape Verde national cycling squad is heading to the Isle of Wight to prepare for next month’s UCI World Cycling Championships in Scotland.
The 6 team members from the collection of Islands off Africa will start a 10-day training camp in the New Forest on Sunday (22nd July), which will include a trip across the Solent next Wednesday (26th July) when the squad plan to cycle around the Isle of Wight – twice!
The training camp is being led by Dave Savage, of Fareham-based Dave Savage Sports ahead of the UCI World Cycling Championships which are taking place in Glasgow from 3rd to 13th August.
2 athletes – Che Gomes and Renato Soares – arrived at Heathrow on Thursday (20th July) and collected their bikes from Southampton this morning.
Dave said:
“The Cape Verde team are not here to make up the numbers. They’re very talented riders and they mean business. The training camp will give them the perfect preparation for the championships in Glasgow.”
“The cultural differences are vast as will be the terrain but it’s important for the team to adapt as soon as possible ready for the biggest event of their lives.
Dave, who competed at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, added:
“The team struggle with funding and support programmes in Cape Verde, so to give them the opportunity to perform on the world stage is a huge privilege. I can’t wait to get started.”

Their roads must be as crap as ours then!
not as good as that
No one wants you here, go peddle somewhere else you bell ends!!
They are public roads, not race tracks for the use of idiot lycras when it suits them…
Cyclist’s are the biggest pain in the ar*es since Piles.
At least you can buy cream for piles.
What annoys me is that the Island is not Cycle friendly, we have hardly any
cycle lanes on the island.
Let’s be honest our Roads are some of the most unsafe roads in England.
This is just another excuse for cyclists to cycle around the Island holding each other’s
hands p*ssing off us motorists who pay to be on the Road.
Think Cars and Vans
