Scouts across the Isle of Wight are still able to interact with one another and learn vital skills thanks to the efforts of local leaders, as scouting goes back to virtual!
2020 was a memorable year for Isle of Wight Scouting for many reasons, most unexpectedly because of the need to develop instant skills in virtual Scouting. Those skills are once again coming in handy as 2021 gets underway with another nationwide lockdown.
Leaders across the Island last year ran virtual meetings, games, cooking, St Georges’ Day celebrations, fundraising, VE day and Remembrance Day commemorations and taught virtual-learning skills for life. But the most enjoyable events for everyone were the virtual camps. Hundreds of Scouts, together with family, friends and even parents, set up tents, forts, dens and undercover beds in their homes and gardens.
The scouting community all pulled together through the lockdowns and had just started getting back to face-to-face Scouting, but now they are back to Zoom meetings. Once again the leadership team is working hard to bring virtual scouting to over 1,000 young people on the Island.
A couple of Island-based Scout Groups had been looking forward to going away to the Gilwell HQ campsite for the annual Winter Camp this weekend, but now hundreds of Isle of Wight Scouts and their friends and family will be having a Winter Camp at home instead.
