Following last night’s decision by the Isle of Wight Council Planning Committee to approve planning permission for the Island’s first ASDA store, the supermarket have this morning (Thursday) confirmed to Island Echo that the store’s doors will open by early 2017.
The brand new ASDA development on land off of St George’s Way, Newport will start later this year with hopes to open to the public by Christmas 2016 or early 2017 – over two years away.
Commenting on which parcel of land they will be building on, a spokesperson for ASDA has confirmed that they will be building in accordance to their planning application and not that of South Coast Leisure, who were also granted approval at last night’s meeting.
Doug Wilson, ASDA’s Head of UK Property Communications said:
“We are delighted that the Council’s Planning Committee has approved our planning application for a new ASDA store on St George’s Way. We will look to begin work on the site later this year with a view to opening the new store in late 2016, early 2017.
“We have already begun discussions with Job Centre Plus as to how ASDA’s recruitment programme can support the Island’s employment and training priorities and we expect to meet with other Island groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and the trader and tourist organisations as we work on the finer details of the store’s delivery.
“We have had great support from the local community throughout the planning process and we would like to thank everyone for all of their efforts on our behalf.
“We are very much looking forward to coming to the Island”.
