This year’s Royal Isle of Wight County Show marks a remarkable milestone as it celebrates its 125th event – a legacy built on Royal patronage, agricultural tradition and extraordinary resilience.
Founded in May 1882, the Royal Isle of Wight Agricultural Society staged its first show in Newport under the patronage of Queen Victoria, who was herself an enthusiastic livestock breeder. The Royal connection was evident from the outset, with Queen Victoria entering – and winning – competitions. In 1885, the event was even rescheduled to accommodate the wedding of her daughter, Princess Beatrice.
Over the past 144 years, the Show has faced numerous challenges. Foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks, both World Wars and, more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic all forced cancellations, testing the resilience of the Society and the Island’s agricultural community.
Despite these setbacks, the Society has continually adapted and grown. It purchased its own showground at Nine Acres in 1922 before relocating to its permanent home at Northwood in 1967, where the site was officially opened by Earl Mountbatten of Burma.
In more recent years, the Show has gone from strength to strength. The Household Cavalry thrilled visitors in 2019, while the Queen’s Colour Squadron proved a major attraction in 2022. Past highlights have also included legendary Grand National winner Red Rum and spectacular displays by the Red Devils parachute team.
As part of this year’s celebrations, the Society is preserving and sharing its rich history thanks to funding from The Creative Island’s Past Futures – A People’s History of the Isle of Wight project, made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The support comes at a fitting time, helping ensure the story of one of the Island’s longest-running events is preserved for future generations.
The 125th Royal Isle of Wight County Show promises all the traditional attractions visitors have come to expect, from livestock and equestrian competitions to rural crafts and family entertainment, alongside exciting new additions including camel racing.
The Royal Isle of Wight County Show takes place on 11th and 12th July. Advance adult tickets are £12.50, with under-16s admitted free. For more information or to book tickets, visit iwcountyshow.co.uk.
