A 74-year-old pensioner was allegedly choked and thrown to the ground after challenging a dog owner who was taking a dog onto Hope Beach, where dogs are prohibited.
Police have launched an investigation after the incident, which happened at around 17:00 on Sunday afternoon (5th July) on the revetment at Hope Beach, between Sandown and Shanklin.
The victim says he saw a couple and their child taking a dog onto the beach and politely pointed out that dogs are not allowed there during the Summer months.
The man – believed to be in his 30s – allegedly became aggressive and went ‘berserk’.
After questioning whether it was appropriate to behave in that way in front of a child, the victim says he was then called a ‘nonce’ by the woman.
The pensioner took out his mobile phone to record the confrontation, but says he was ordered to delete the footage. When he refused, he alleges he was grabbed by the throat, choked and thrown to the ground.
Despite repeatedly shouting for help, the pensioner says nobody came to his aid.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service attended the scene, where paramedics checked the 74-year-old over.
Speaking to Island Echo, the pensioner said he remains traumatised, angry and shaken by the incident.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that the man received minor injuries and that investigations are ongoing.
