Former Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club rower Louis Sheasby has become a Henley Royal Regatta champion after helping Leander win the prestigious Fawley Challenge Cup.
Sheasby, who learned his craft with Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club during his school years, joined Alfie Webb, Cameron McKenzie and Alexander Didaskalou to secure victory in one of the world’s most competitive junior rowing events.
The Fawley Challenge Cup, one of Henley Royal Regatta’s premier junior competitions, is widely regarded as one of the sport’s most coveted junior titles. This year’s event attracted 72 crews from around the world, with only 24 progressing to the knockout stages. Thanks to impressive performances earlier in the season, Leander earned 1 of just 6 pre-selected places, allowing the crew to bypass Tuesday’s qualifying races and begin their campaign in Thursday’s last 16.
Leander’s title charge got off to the perfect start with a comfortable victory over Tiffin School.
Friday brought an international test against Miami’s Belen Jesuit Preparatory School. The American crew stayed in contention during the opening stages before Leander found another gear, pulling away to record a convincing two-and-a-half-length victory.
Saturday’s semi-final against Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School proved a much sterner examination. After establishing an early lead of around a length, Leander were forced to withstand a determined charge over the closing 200 metres before holding on to win by three-quarters of a length and book their place in the final.
The achievement was made all the more remarkable by the crew’s disrupted preparations. Injury and illness meant they were unable to row together as a full quad until March, leaving little time to develop their combination ahead of the season’s biggest regatta.
Sunday’s final against Tideway Scullers School had been tipped as a close contest, but Leander quickly stamped their authority on the race. A blistering start gave them a half-length advantage inside the opening 500 metres before stretching their lead to one-and-a-half lengths by halfway.
Although Tideway mounted several determined attacks, Leander remained composed throughout, producing a polished performance to cross the finish line two lengths clear and lift the famous trophy.
Following the victory, Sheasby thanked coach George Nottidge and everyone at Leander for their guidance and support throughout the season. He also paid tribute to his family and friends, together with local sponsor Wightlink in the Community, for backing him during a challenging campaign.
There is little time for celebration, however. Sheasby heads to Nottingham this weekend for the Under-19 Great Britain selection trials, where another standout performance could earn him the opportunity to represent Great Britain on the international stage.
