Ryde Harriers enjoyed an outstanding day at the final race of the 2025/26 Hampshire Road Race League, with Chris Newnham and Carly Scoble both claiming overall victories at the Lordshill 10km.
A large contingent from the Isle of Wight running club travelled across the Solent for the annual event, which sees a series of organised road races for runners from participating clubs across Hampshire take part in a race that attracted around 800 runners.
The race took place on 5th July when warm and humid conditions made for a challenging race from the outset; however, that didn’t stop Newnham from making his intentions clear by leading the field through the opening downhill kilometre in just over 3 minutes, with 4 other athletes following his early pace.
After settling into the lead group, Newnham waited until the final kilometre climb before making his decisive move, sprinting clear to secure victory in an impressive time of 31 minutes and 56 seconds.
Scoble also produced a superb performance, moving through the field to take the lead in the women’s race before crossing the finish line first in a personal best time of 37:45.
There was further success for Ryde Harriers as Daniel Furmidge finished 14th overall, but impressively secured 1st place in the Masters 50 category with a time of just 35:07.
Moving up the age ranks, Steve Hargrove claimed 2nd place in the Masters 60 category with a time of 40:53.
Ryde Harriers coach, Geoff Watkin said:
“This was an excellent all-round Ryde Harrier club performance and, in such a large field, seeing the club do so well and taking the two top individual positions as well as top places in the Masters categories. Well done all Harriers that competed.”
