“Our speed limits are ridiculous”, a Reform UK Isle of Wight councillor has said following criticism of speeding drivers by a Green Party representative.
Cllr Stephen Reynolds took to social media after County Hall’s member for Chale, Niton and Shorwell, Claire Critchison, said she would like to see 20 mile per hour limits in both Niton and Whitwell village centres.
In a comment under the story on the County Press Facebook page, the Shanklin Central councillor said it is the ‘wrong easy targets’ that get hit with enforcement and that ‘we were all young once’.
His quote in full was:
“I’m a councillor and it’s the wrong easy targets that get hit with enforcement and our speed limits are ridiculous in my opinion constantly changing on main roads the quality of drivers is a problem and the lack of enforcement with anti social driving that has become a problem a lot taking place by mainland drivers everyone blaming drivers with modified cars remember we were all young once my real beef is driving while unfit due to drugs alcohol now that’s the problem and needs fixing not doing 40 on a main road that has now become a 30.”
At Niton and Whitwell Parish Council, Cllr Critchison said residents breaking the speed limit are ‘not respecting their community’. She said speeding is the issue most frequently raised by residents who ‘so badly’ want to ‘see something done’.
Cllr Critchison said having speed watch data would result in a better chance of an intervention.
Councillors Reynolds and Critchison have been approached for further comment.

Its so easy to blame speeding motorists, but how often have you read in this publication that the drivers involved in most of the crashes were either drunk or had been taking drugs?
.We all want safer roads on the Island, but persecuting the average motorist for doing 35mph is not the answer!
Get the dangerous motorists off the road, drink and drug driving is the real issue here and is where the Police need to concentrate their efforts!
Yes the police need to do spot checks on snort/swill boy racers and speeders. They are easy enough to spot, you can hear them coming with their pop bang and noisy exhausts, and modified cars uninsured. Park up unmarked along Ryde Esplanade, they are along there all day long, and so are illegal monkey bikes most of the night

What the hell are you on? We can’t get a response from our police at any time, so think on that idea again, you plank.
I have always said that it’s not the speed it’s poor driving that causes the problems But it’s easy money in fines and nothing changes. I often follow people who do 35 mph in a 40 and carry on at 35 + when it comes to the 30 limit. It’s strange how cars have got safer yet driving has got worse. Reducing the speed limit won’t stop the boy races or drinks/drug drivers. If councils want to make money start fining drivers going 5/10mph under the limit.

In Portugal they have detectors before the main town that if activated due to a speeding car it triggers a traffic light to come on to red and they have to stop hence slowing them down to the speed limit. They have cameras on the traffic light so if they jump the light it’s an even greater offence and they have the car details and driver photo. They are many spots on the island where is would work.

Did Cllr Reynolds really say all that in one sentence? He has a point, though – it is just too convenient to simply look at speed. Speed does not kill, poor driving does. However, it is equally convenient to point the finger at mainlanders but the reality is that the standard of driving on the Island by people with Island registered cars is deplorable. We need drink drivers off the road and, now that the numbers drug driving massively outweigh the drink drivers, we need the drug drivers targeted too. But we also need to address the poor standard of driving and, let us be brutally honest, it is often demonstrated by the elderly who have become less aware of what is happening around them and whose reactions have slowed – these people need to accept that they do not have a right to drive. Driving is a privilege and anyone who is not capable of doing it properly whether through drink drugs or incapacity particularly connected to ageing should have the privilege withdrawn. By the time you kill or injure someone it is too late to accept that you should not be in control of a motor vehicle.

Reynolds rant is simply that. First off, he’s written as he would speak – no punctuation, no objectivity, no coherent, constructive view. Simply the rant of an idiot. To say “we were all boys once”, is absolutely ridiculous and it’s obvious he’s in favour of speed limits being broken.
I see many motorists not observing speed limits on the island, especially tourists.
Lower speed can help save lives.
I’m all in favour of 20mph limits. It may add 5 seconds to the journey, but so what?

Every day my commute is made intolerable by idiots bumbling along at 25-30 on a 60mph road.
They are not observing road signage, or even dimly aware of the frustration they cause, this is dangerous, and should also face a penalty.
Funny how all the people commenting are clearly OLD. Think you forget that you were all young once, most of the time back then yes your cars didnt go over 30 or maybe your so old you remember horse and cart. But what you need to remember is that slowing people down is only going to annoy the young people more and cause them to speed. Someone here said make the military road a 40, that’s ridiculous, because bikes still fly past at 200, no matter what, why? Because its a lovely bit of road. Most accidents are cause my incompetence, drunk or drug driving or OLD people that cant even get to the house without a stick. Today i saw some ancient figure driving who was on OXYGEN. How is that allowed? Thats okay but you blame the young boy racers who just want to have a good time, yet you persecute them because they just want to enjoy life, pushing the limits, because thats how we all learn. Green party have always been ridiculous not sure how they got in but people need to wake up and realise that speeding and young people are not at fault, because people will always speed no matter the limit.
