Local charity Independent Arts is inviting older members of the community to join creative sessions as part of their Arts Council funded project Time & Tide.
Arts and heritage cafés will be running at local libraries throughout the whole of 2018. These sessions will include a box of objects and artefacts from periods of the Island’s rich history, which will inspire participants to create artworks.
Workshops will also take place in local care homes and Southern Housing Group schemes. The artworks created will be displayed in exhibitions throughout the year.
The cafés will begin at Lord Louis Library, Newport on Friday 26th January from 10:30-12:30, travelling to Ryde, Sandown, Freshwater, Cowes and Ventnor libraries over the next few months.
In 2017 the charity was awarded a grant from Arts Council England to fund an exciting Island-wide programme of participatory arts to increase older people’s engagement with cultural organisations. Working in partnership with Age UK IOW, Southern Housing Group, local museums and libraries, Time & Tide provides new opportunities for older people to attend creative workshops, take part in cultural site visits and enables them to experience and participate in high-quality arts and heritage activities.
Hannah Griffiths, Project Manager at Independent Arts says:
“We are so excited to bring our Arts and Heritage Cafés to local libraries, and to see what people will be inspired to produce. We hope these sessions will be voyages of discovery for participants, learning about our rich history and embarking on a new creative endeavour.
“We are looking for volunteers to support these sessions, so if you have an interest in art or heritage we would love to hear from you.”
