A project to install 85 metres of modern safety railings that complement Ventnor’s historic character has been completed by Island Roads.
Island Roads worked closely with the Isle of Wight Council’s conservation officer to agree a scheme to replace the existing parapets in Alpine Road. The new decorative steel railings match those of the adjacent former St Catherine’s Church Hall yet have all the strength required to meet safety standards.
Luke Ward, Project Manager of structures at Island Roads, said:
“We feel the solution meets both the current highway safety requirements and is also in keeping with the conservation sensitivity of Ventnor. The new parapet solution was agreed with the conservation team and we are pleased with the result. As part of the work, we also agreed to paint the neighbouring parapet system black to match the new parts. We’d like to thank the local community for their support and co-operation during constructions and hope they also like the new feature.”
In order to meet modern safety standards, it has been necessary to fix the new reinforced concrete parapet beam into the highway – hence the need for traffic lights during work. The scheme was designed by industry experts WSP while Isle of Wight contractor Stoneham Construction undertook the work.
Luke said:
“Once again we were really pleased to work with Stoneham – a local company who really understand our wish to deliver modern safety standards in a way that respects local heritage.”
The former church hall of St Catherine’s Church was also used as an Evangelical Chapel from 1976 but is now a private dwelling.

It looks nice, shame Island roads didn’t take the chance to re surface the road.
That’s obviously the traditional bit referred to.
Most impressive, but oh the Road it’s way past resurfacing, very much like a concrete farm track!
“…concrete farm track” ….that’s posh!
Sorry, what was wrong with the fence that was there before? They could have used the money this lot cost on resurfacing the road which is a death hazard to two wheeled vehicles.
How long did it take! absolute joke yet again, every time i went past either nothing was happening, no one was there or they were doing there standing around watching one person work while on there phones!!!
Looks really smart – just need to resurface Alpine Road. Alongside the re-built Belgrave Road section, and the new wall up Bath Road, Ventnor is gradually looking better and better
