Emergency services, including an air ambulance, have been called to a serious road traffic collision between Apse Heath and Lake tonight (Thursday).
Police and ambulance crews are on scene at Newport Road having been alerted to the incident – which is thought to involve a motorcycle – at around 22:00.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance touched down near to Sandown Airport at around 22:25 having flown a short distance from Southampton.
The main Newport to Sandown route has been closed in both directions, with a cordon established at the roundabouts either end of the road.
It’s unclear at this early stage how long the road will be closed for.
Southern Vectis’ Route 8 buses have been put on diversion as a result.
“Due to an accident, buses are unable to serve between Rajs Premier to Sandown Airport.
“Buses will divert via Canteen Rd and Shanklin and will still serve Morrisons and Winford.”
UPDATE @ 23:35 – The air ambulance has, in the past few minutes, lifted off from Apse Heath and has relocated to the helipad at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport.
It’s believed the casualty has been conveyed by land ambulance to the local hospital, accompanied by the flying doctors.
UPDATE @ 05:30 – The road has now re-opened.
UPDATE @ 09:27 – A man in his 30s has been reported for summons after failing to provide a specimen to Police. Oh no. Not another accident along that stretch of road.
Why is this happening so often these days. Ggrrr
Because Josie, some, not all car drivers and motorcyclists drive and ride island roads as if they are on a racetrack. No respect for speed limits and other road users and basically, some, just can’t drive or ride safely. Anyone can drive fast, but why so many do here I just can’t understand it. Loud exhausts on cars and bikes, popping and banging because they paid for their car to be remapped this way. They are under the illusion it sounds good! It’s nothing but a menace to society and these loud exhausts need to made illegal.
Surely everyone understands SPEED KILLS. SLOW DOWN.
We don’t know what happened Sunshine. It may have been a grumpy resident wielding a stick for all you know! Let’s all hope that the patient is ok.
What planet do people like you come from?….there’s far too many of you around…
When I first got a car, souped up cortinas and escorts were all the rage. Woe betide anyone that had a non standard, or noisy exhaust. The police would stand at the road side with a decibel meter and pull any vehicle over that exceeded the required level.
Okay most were given a producer but they would be warned that a fine would be heading their way should they not get the exhaust fixed.
When did this change???
Probably when police stopped standing at the road side Arthur.
How exactly do you know this person was speeding? Maybe he was, but maybe he wasn’t. Who are you to immediately make judgment?
I agree sound limits should be enforced re exhaust systems we live in a stressful world enough as it is. This is noise pollution and a danger to hearing. It is also incredibly off putting to other drivers a d pedestrians and terrifying fir horse riders
I am not referring to this accident but feel it is time for the IW Council to take responsibility for residents and visitors on the island roads and introduce an overall maximum 40 mph limit. Then it needs to be enforced. There is no need for 60 maximum and with the ever increasing number of vehicles, includings HGVs it does not make sense to have it that high.
Sincerely hope all involved are okay.
And a speed limit would do what exactly??? I drive at the speed limit and guess what? A large queue forms behind. There is a hardcore who ignore speed limits and any other regulation, especially giving way to the right at mini roundabouts.
As we all see with our phones. Small cheap cameras give amazing clarity now.
It would be so cheap and easy to have quality hidden cameras on every major road now with data sent back to the police station.
Then officers would be able to remain at their desks sipping coffee watching a screen all day which would auto flag up speeding cars
It would pay for itself in a week.
Repeat offenders could attend court for their sentences of £20 fine and maybe if only crippling someone a years ban too
When will the council fix the islands black spots? There needs to be traffic lights at apse Heath. It’s always a lottery there. A mini roundabout is pathetic on such a busy road. Sadly the island is no longer a pleasurable tootle around. Driving in general onthe island is getting very cut throat. It seems a huge percentage of cars tailgate and generally run cautious and good drivers off the road. Something needs to be done fast.
