A crunch Isle of Wight parish council meeting due to take place this evening (Wednesday) has been cancelled due to an ‘administrative error’ by its clerk.
Shalfleet’s troubled local authority was due to convene at Shalfleet Village Hall at 19:15 this evening to discuss a range of matters including a grant application from Shalfleet school, the recent resignation of clerk Tina Bailey and setting a precept.
The cancelled meeting follows months of strife between councillors Steve and Thomas Cowley and four other members: Jonathan Hill, Jackie Laurie, Jane Timbrell and Chris Beane.
Steve Cowley, the council’s chair, said: “The clerk failed to sign the summons for the meeting – therefore the meeting is not legal. Because the meeting has not been legally called, any decisions we make are not legal.
“The situation is uncertain. I have called another extraordinary general meeting for next week.”
Cllr Hill said the lack of a signature was an “administrative error” and “no one’s fault, just one of those things”.
It’s a shame the Cowleys think they can ride rough-shod over everyone and make the rural villages of the west wight their little fifedoms. I’m sure that council would do better without them on it.
How can the clerk be responsible for the administrative failure in calling a meeting to discuss, aong otherthings, her own resignation. It is an old and very disingenuous trick to blame the person who was not there. The Chair should step up to the plate and take responsibility. These councillors are too busy squabbling amongstthemselves and should all do the decent thing and stand down.
Godshill High Street should be like Shalfleet
much safer for everyone.
Then the Pavements could be made wider for
pedestrians to walk along safely.
