Newport lost a 9-goal thriller, East Cowes Vics won handsomely at Fawley and Cowes Sports bowed out of the Hampshire Cup yesterday evening (Tuesday).
YOUNG PORT SIDE PUSH PLANEMAKERS ALL THE WAY IN 9-GOAL CUP THRILLER
Port rested a number of senior players for the 2nd Round Industrial Boilers Wessex League Cup tie at WightFibre Park, giving opportunities to younger players. Folland Sports, meanwhile, were understood to have brought their strongest available XI to the Island.
Newport suffered an early setback when Kade Woodford was forced off injured after just 7 minutes, with Ji Nash replacing him. The Planemakers made the brighter start, with lively Clayd Roach twice threatening Leon Pitman’s goal, while Kudzi Mazambara fired wide at the other end.
Port survived a scare in the 22nd minute when Brad Young’s header looped over Pitman towards his own goal before being cleared. A minute later, Follands were ahead when Landon Carmichael converted a cross from inside the 6-yard box (0–1).
Sonny Myram levelled from close range following a corner in the 28th minute (1–1), before Nash rattled the post as Newport threatened again.
Jez Conway then put Port ahead with a 25-yard free kick in the 39th minute (2–1), but Joao Ferreira struck on the stroke of half time to send the sides in level (2–2).

Player-manager Joe Butcher replaced Nash at the interval, but the Planemakers regained the lead in the 57th minute when Pitman saved a powerful effort only for Bayley Whitcombe to convert the rebound (2–3).
Mazambara was denied by a good save at the other end before Joe Hancott and Kai Grace replaced Mazambara and Keelan Walsh. Within a minute of the double substitution, Fred Penfold dispossessed Pitman and rolled the ball into the empty net to leave Newport 2 goals behind (2–4).
Myram gave Port renewed hope in the 66th minute, lobbing the Follands keeper to complete his brace (3–4).
Port were level with 8 minutes remaining when Butcher released Conway, who also lobbed the keeper to claim his 2nd of the night (4–4).
Just 4 minutes later, Jo Sutherden restored the Planemakers’ advantage (4–5).
Port pushed for yet another equaliser and Macauley Watterson had the final opportunity, but his header cleared the crossbar as Follands held on.

YACHTSMEN CRASH OUT AS ISLE OF WIGHT’S HAMPSHIRE CUP HOPES END AT ANDOVER
Cowes Sports travelled to Foxcotte Park as the Isle of Wight’s last remaining representatives in the Servio Hampshire Cup, but their 2nd Round tie rapidly slipped away during a nightmare 1st half.
Josh Jeffery gave Andover New Street the perfect start after just 3 minutes (1–0), before the hosts won possession high up the pitch and Dotse squared for Harry Beckley to double their advantage (2–0).
Beckley struck again in the 23rd minute, cutting onto his left foot and finding the corner (3–0), before Izzy Kaba converted from a Rawkins corner in the 34th (4–0).
Charlie Bell’s 1st goal for New Street made it 5–0 just 3 minutes before the interval.
Otto West pulled one back in the 67th minute (5–1), but Bell scored his 2nd of the evening in the 79th after his initial effort had been blocked (6–1).
Substitute Sam Hatton added a 2nd consolation for Cowes in injury time (6–2), with the defeat ending the Island’s involvement in this season’s competition.

VICS CRUISE INTO LEAGUE CUP 2ND ROUND ‘AT A CANTER’
East Cowes Vics recorded an impressive 0–3 win against a Fawley side that had beaten Newport 0–3 at WightFibre Park only a week earlier.
Vics seized control of their Industrial Boilers Wessex League Cup 1st Round tie with 2 goals in the space of 5 minutes. Charlie Hayward opened the scoring in the 32nd minute (0–1), before Charlie Hart doubled their advantage in the 37th (0–2).
Hayward later made way for Will Bridi, and the substitute completed an emphatic away victory with Vics’ 3rd goal in the 77th minute (0–3).
If the scoreline suggested a comfortable evening, manager Alex Smith believed it could have been even more emphatic. He said Vics could have scored “plenty more” and won “at a canter”, describing the display as a “top, top team performance”.
Smith also made clear that the League Cup was a competition his side wanted to get “deep into”.
