A team of Island rowers will take on more than 21 miles of the River Thames this weekend as they represent the Isle of Wight at The Great River Race in aid of Mountbatten Isle of Wight.
The Island Harbour-based Island Gig Rowers will field a team of 7 rowers and a cox for the challenge on Saturday (12th September).
Setting off just after 11:00, the crew will row from Millwall Docks to Richmond, passing through the heart of the capital.
Around 270 boats are expected to take part, with staggered start times and crews travelling from around the world to compete. The Island Gig Rowers completed the challenge in 3 hours and 41 minutes in 2025.
Among those taking part is Sandie, who is rowing in memory of her husband, Dennis, who was cared for by Mountbatten Isle of Wight.
Sandie has said:
“It’s like a marathon. Your legs and arms get wobbly as you go on.
“He would have thought I was crazy, as usual!

The route stretches for just over 21 miles along the Thames, taking competitors past some of London’s most recognisable sights.
Explaining why the team is supporting the charity, Sandie has said:
“Mountbatten Isle of Wight is an Island charity and everybody, at some time in their lives, will be touched by Mountbatten.”
