2 aspiring musicians from Ryde Sea Cadets experienced an opportunity of a lifetime at the National Cadet Band week held in Plymouth at HMS Raleigh. William Gill Cheney, aged 12, and Thomas Bridger, aged 15, were chosen to represent their unit in an intensive five-day training program that culminated in a grand concert and a prestigious “Beat the Retreat” ceremony. The journey for these young cadets began on Sunday, April 7th, when they travelled from their homes on the Isle of Wight to Plymouth. William, a student at the Priory School, and Thomas, from Ryde Academy, have both honed their musical talents as members of the Medina Marching Band, which has been a significant influence in their musical education. Throughout the week, their days started early at 06:15, with rehearsals beginning at 08:15. The program was rigorous but rewarding, featuring not only practice sessions but also conducting classes and drum major training. Moreover, participants received valuable lessons on maintaining their instruments, ensuring their performances were nothing short of professional. William, who plays the bass trombone, and Thomas, a side drum enthusiast, quickly adapted to the demanding schedule. Impressively, William was the youngest cadet at the event, his trombone nearly as tall as he is. Despite his age, he performed with poise and confidence. Meanwhile, Thomas demonstrated his rapid progress by moving from the beginner group to the intermediate drummers in a short span, highlighting his natural talent and dedication. The week’s highlight was undoubtedly the performances — a beautifully executed concert on Thursday and the ceremonious “Beat the Retreat” at Plymouth Hoe on Friday. These events not only showcased the skills they had refined during the week but also their ability to hold their own among peers from diverse regions, including Scarborough and Northern Ireland. Their participation in such a high-calibre event is not just a testament to their musical abilities but also to their commitment to the Sea Cadets. Both boys returned home with enhanced skills, newfound confidence, and the excitement of future performances, including the upcoming Trafalgar Day parades. As the community of Ryde and the broader network of Sea Cadets celebrate the achievements of these young musicians, it is clear that William and Thomas are not just participants in their marching band; they are ambassadors of dedication, perseverance, and the spirited life of the Sea Cadets. The future is undoubtedly bright for these young talents, who have already begun to make their mark in the world of military music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4_Z5At7HPg
