Work has begun on transforming the former Bright House and Dorothy Perkins store in the heart of Newport into a Tesco Express. Contractors have arrived on site in the High Street to establish the supermarket giant’s 6th store on the Island, although an opening date is yet to be announced. In 2022, Tesco obtained permission to move into the former Laura Ashley outlet further down the High Street, opposite Central Stores. But those plans have since stalled with Tesco favouring the store on the corner of St James’ Street instead. The premises, situated next to JD Sports, has been empty for 5 years since BrightHouse moved out in February 2019. Tesco Express Newport will complement Express stores in Wootton, Lake and Ventnor, and larger stores in both Ryde and Freshwater. It’s thought that the Newport store will be open from 06:00-midnight, 7 days a week.

Let’s hope it has good security as will be full of shoplifters and courts just fine them little IF caught. Which pushes up prices for the rest of us
Shoplifters should be tagged like expensive items are and an alarm then activated as soon as they enter the store so they can be watched or banned completely
What a genius idea to tag them with a tag system that triggers shop door alarm sensors.
You should patent the idea. !
That is just what is needed. Then store detectives could be alerted, and for those who commit shop lifting again, they the siren could sound for the customers to be alerted and the person removed from the shop.
Why should we all have to pay more to cover this thieving scum, even the min wage pays over £400 a week, and IF that aint enough then go to the food bank.
So NOW no excuse.
It would be cheaper to just brand their faces with the words “convicted shoplifter”.
Will look forward to seeing more drunks hanging around outside it
I’m hoping they’ll put some benches out there for us. It’s so much better drinking cider sitting in the sun.
Tesco… they want to rule the whole world..
Wonder if they will make the upstairs floors into affordable housing to
help with the housing shortage .Tesco Ventnor has flats above the store .
A lot shops have empty floors which used to be stock rooms but they are
not used these days due to modern logistics and online ordering .Maybe
Bob Seely will get involved as he is so active these last few months !!
Can’t wait to see all the lazy lowlife bumping up on the pavements in their cars, blocking pedestrians and traffic who while they pop in to buy some fags and bottles of prime! All while dressed in fake tracksuits and Jim jams leaving the engine running with baby princess in the backseat, just another step closer to making Newport a dump.
Been a shit hole dump for many years can get worse…
Every little helps….
is there a back or side place for unloading.
There’s a loading bay literally just yards down the road. It’s what the other shops all use too.
Fantastic news that one of the large empty shops in newport will be occupied again! Pleased to see nationals taking an interest in our high street too.
Yes it is good that the empty shop space will be filled again and also create some employment. But the other side of the coin is I remember some years ago watching a documentary about a north England town, where many local filling stations and stores had fallen on hard times. New Tesco formats appeared like, ‘Express’, ‘Extra’, ‘Metro’, ‘Superstore’, ‘Total Tesco Store’ and ‘One Stop’. Gradually, Tesco took virtually all the privately owned Petrol forecourts and numerous small stores. Eventually amassing to 22 some sort of Tesco Outlets in the town area. With the amount of major UK stores filling the Island high Street spaces, will we end up the same? ‘Tis a fine line between the much needed outside investments against what we could lose…
A fabulous West Quay type building with all the shops inside. Cafes and places to eat too.
Making the business rates cheaper for the shops.
Plenty of parking and……… the main doors shut tight at the push of a button in any shop in the building so that thieves can not leave by the main doors.
CCTV would identify them and nobody can leave until they are found within.
That’s my idea.
Will there be any section 106 money as part of this store opening?
No? Why would there be? It isn’t a housing development and there are no planning obligations to be met?
Strange question.
