Wightlink is supporting the whale and dolphin conservation charity ORCA to survey the Solent again this year.
Spotters will be on board ferries sailing between Fishbourne and Portsmouth this weekend (30th-31st July) looking out for cetaceans – the collective name for whales, dolphins and porpoises.
This is part of a 9 day survey of UK coastal waters. Last year there was a total of 1939 sightings of 16 different species.
Elwyn Dop, Wightlink’s Operations Director says:
“We are delighted to get involved again with this initiative.
“We will be pleased to welcome the team on board this weekend and hope they will be successful. Wightlink also supports ORCA staff who travel to Isle of Wight schools to increase awareness of conservation issues among young people.”
Sally Hamilton, UK Director of ORCA adds:
“Through ORCA Oceanwatch, we are expecting to build one of the most detailed snapshots of our marine wildlife, as well as getting the public and local businesses and organisations who use the sea, actively involved in marine conservation.”
ORCA will be publicising updates on Twitter at @ORCA_web during the survey period using #ORCAOceanWatch
