After a 2-year absence, the Wight Tri Spring Triathlon took place at Gurnard Pines, Cowes.
The event consisted of a sprint distance triathlon of 400m pool swim, 23.5km cycle, and 7 km run. 29 Wight Tri club members took part. This event also hosted the Wight Tri Sprint Female and Male Championships.
The 400m swim was held in Gurnard Pines, with competitors setting off in waves according to swim times. The undulating cycle loop meandered through Porchfield, towards Shalfleet, returning up Forest Road to head back via Whitehouse Road to Thorness, and back to Gurnard Pines. The run was an out and back route, taking the runners along Gurnard seafront to the turning point at Egypt Point.
The first placed Male and Wight Tri Male Sprint Triathlon Champion was Craig Wilson in 1:16:50, who had a super swim (6:54) and bike split (39:12) to hold off the fast running of Sean Williams, who finished 2nd in 1:18:02. With over 3 mins to make up after the swim and bike legs, Sean posted the fastest run of 27:17 to overtake 3rd placed, new member Jack Hodgson, but it wasn’t enough to catch Craig.
Jack also posted the fasted Male swim of 6:16, completing the event in 1:18:15.
The Female Championships Race was just as close between the top competitors.
Millie Williams led out after the swim with a super-fast 6:15, followed by Jan Fletcher in 6:47. However Jan’s strength on the bike saw her take the lead into T2, posting the fastest female bike split of 43:58, heading into the run over 80 seconds ahead. Even with Millie posting the fastest female run split of 28:33, she couldn’t catch Jan who was also running a personal best run split of 29:00.
Jan took 1st place and the Wight Tri Female Sprint Triathlon Championship Award, with a finish time of 1:21:19 with Millie taking runner up spot in 1:22:13. New member Laoise Bennis had a superb race to take 3rd place, finishing in 1:30:29.
