An unusual yellow weather warning for freezing fog has been issued for the Isle of Wight this evening (New Year’s Eve).
Forecasters at IW Met Service – the official weather provider of Island Echo – say that freezing fog patches will develop this evening and into the night with some locally dense patches likely, especially in more rural parts.
Fog horns can already be heard in the Solent.
Along with the freezing fog, forecasters are expecting another night of ice, again with the highest risk in rural parts with slippery conditions on untreated surfaces. The risk of black ice is slightly less than last night due to the frost being easily visible in most areas.
Where fog is dense significant ice deposits are likely on plants, trees, power lines etc., especially where exposed to the breeze. However, not everywhere will see the foggy conditions.
Icy roads will be the main hazard and this combined with significantly reduced visibility will give some difficult driving conditions locally.
Gritters are already out treating the Island’s road network and will be redeployed at 05:00 tomorrow morning.
The warning is in force from 18:00 on 31st December until 14:00 on 1st January 2021.
