Ventnor & District Local History Society is to publish a new book in September, offering a journey through time in pictures.
‘Ventnor and the Undercliff: In Search of Lost Time’ is about recovering life-worlds and discovering livelihoods through photographs. It draws on images from the Society’s archive, as well as some in private hands.
The 180 or so black and white pictures span the years from 1860 to 1950 and will be accompanied by extended captions together with short narrative texts, including many personal memories.
The published price will be £12.95 (£10 for Society members).
Pre-orders are being taken from next week at the pre-publication price of £10.00 (£9.00 for VDLHS members). The book will be available to pre-order from the Soceity’s online shop.

Seems very interesting. Lets hope many buy such. I wonder how in a hundred and fifty years or more, books will show life here today as being portrayed.
I wonder if only the good parts will be shown or if local history will then matter at all to the mixed race society.
I’ll be pre-ordering from Canada, I don’t get to make it home too often (especially this year) and I miss the history that remains so well preserved on the Island…compared to Canada where “history” is a building that looks a few decades old.
While this book will end a few years before I was born in Ventnor, its the history of Ventnor that I am drawn back to so often.
Heading back to Ventnor is a reminder of what life SHOULD be like today. I know all the locals think it’s changed so much but, compared to other places in the world, it is the same as always. The names and faces have changed but not the places.
