A section of Newport Town Centre has been cordoned off this lunchtime (Monday) following an incident which has seen an elderly female pedestrian run over by a bus.
The incident – involving a Southern Vectis bus – has happened on St James’ Street near St James’ Square, with emergency services first called at around 14:15.
Several resources from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service – including a Critical Care Paramedic and Operational Commander – are on scene tending to what Island Echo understands is an elderly female.
It is believed that she has sustained a serious but not life-threatening, leg injury.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary have also been called, with a cordon now erected between Pyle Street and High Street.
UPDATE @ 15:00 – The casualty has been lifted from the road and conveyed on blue lights to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
Police have confirmed that the casualty is a woman in her 70s.
The road remains closed for the time being.
UPDATE @ 15:15 – Cordons in the area have now been lifted, but the road remains closed.
Officers are conducting initial on scene investigations, which includes looking at the bus’ onboard CCTV.
UPDATE @ 15:35 – The road has now re-opened to all traffic and pedestrians.
The casualty is receiving treatment at St Mary’s Hospital.
This is what happens when you have certain traffic flowing in the opposite direction to the flow of traffic in an apparent one way system.
Whoever is responsible for the road layout
must have been p*ssed at the time.
With Taxis and Buses using the bus lane
and coming from the High Street, it does
get confusing.
Poor lady, wish her a speedy recovery.
why can’t anyone thumbs up anymore since this site has become all politically correct, I wanted to up Birdmaniw but despite being logged in it doesn’t happen???
This is also why we have traffic lights and crossings . I’ve seen too many people cross randomly, and sometimes just yards from an official crossing. Yes it maybe a pain to walk a few extra yards but they are there for our safety.
I hope she will be ok though.
Very sad news.
I must say the Bus Lane with Buses coming from the High street
into St James Street can be confusing.
From what I see on a daily basis with many individuals glued to
their phones and with their ear pods on, it is an accident
waiting too happen.
Too be honest the actual bus station is dangerous with buses
going in and out, where they stop they block the pedestrian
crossing nr Next, making vision restricted for pedestrians crossing the
Road.
I think an Health and Safety visit to the bus station is a good idea to
see the situation.
Pray the lady recovers.
“Too be honest the actual bus station is dangerous with buses
going in and out”
Absolutely,.. the Bus Station would be so much safer without the busses going in and out…
Improve Road Safety,.. Ban The Busses!
The layout needs changing, that is all.
No reason buses cannot use a bus station,
but the Newport Bus Station is Dangerous
I would just like to say thank you to someone who was on the bus (who is ex paramedic) who was the first person to help the poor lady! Thank you grandad! Wishing the lady a speedy and full recovery!
Dear Oakwood, the “Thumbs up” has been out of action for a long time. I also wish this lady a speedy recovery.
