Musical legend Terry Hall, lead singer of the famous Ska band The Specials, played a very special DJ set at Newport’s Strings on Friday night.
Around 200 admirers of the man and his music descended for a night to remember. Terry began the set by playing reggae and ska music before going on to play some disco classics and more eclectic choices such as Talking Heads.
The Specials shot to fame in the late 70s and early 80s with 7 consecutive top 10 singles. Their 2 most famous hits were ‘Too Much Too Young’ and ‘Ghost Town’, both of which hit No1 in the music charts.
After The Specials broke up, Terry went on to form Fun Boy 3 with 2 other members of the band: Lynval Golding and Neville Staple. He subsequently collaborated with many famous names in the music industry including Bananarama, The Lightning Seeds, Sinead O’Connor, Gorillaz and Lilly Allen.
After the event, co-owner of Strings, Ian Daivison said:
“Terry is a personal hero of mine. To have him come and play in a small venue like this was a dream come true. Terry played a great set from beginning to end. What more can you ask.”
