The Telegraph have ranked the Isle of Wight as one of the top 20 Islands in the world to explore on foot, just 1 of 3 locations in the UK.
The Tennyson Trail from Carisbrooke Castle to The Needles is listed by the national newspaper as the ‘Best Hike’ on the Island, which appears 8th in the walking guide alongside Maderia, Hong Kong, Ibiza, Corsica and Crete, to name a few.
Over half of the Island is recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). With its 60-miles of dramatic Heritage Coastline and more than 500-miles of well-maintained and signposted footpaths the Island has long been recognised as a walker’s paradise.
This week’s publication comes ahead of the return of the popular Isle of Wight Walking Festival, which this year takes place between 29th April – 14th May under the name of ‘IsleWalk17’.
It remains one of the UK’s biggest walking festivals, and allows participants to follow in the footsteps of everyone from Alfred Lord Tennyson to Jimi Hendrix; on the trail of everything from dinosaurs to the prefect dawn chorus; and heading everywhere from Queen Victoria’s Osborne House to a non-stop walk around the entire 72-miles coastal path in 24 hours.
Visit Isle of Wight’s Chief Executive, David Thornton, said:
“We’re delighted to have played a part in rescuing the Island’s annual walking festival – and to be supporting to the new Festival of Running.
“IsleWalk 17 and the Isle of Wight Festival of Running form part of our Spring Wellness campaign to encourage visitors to escape the stress of everyday life and enjoy the tranquility and relaxation that the Island has to offer”.
