A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving following last night’s incident in Ventnor, which saw a Toyota Yaris roll onto its roof in the middle of town.
The unnamed suspect, from Ventnor, was detained by officers near Madeira Road after allegedly fleeing the scene of the single-vehicle collision on the High Street, at the bottom of Spring Hill.
It’s understood the vehicle was travelling down the hill when it collided with a road sign and rolled onto its roof, as first reported by Island Echo. The driver is then said to have got out of the vehicle before punching a bystander and running away.
The one-way system around Ventnor town remained closed for a few hours whilst the scene was made safe and the vehicle – thought to belong to the suspect’s relation – was recovered.
Fire appliances from Shanklin and Ventnor, paramedics and Police all responded to the crash at just before 18:55.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“We were called just before 7pm to a collision in High Street, Ventnor, involving a red Toyota Yaris, which had overturned, and a parked vehicle. It was reported the driver of the Toyota was out of the vehicle and there had been an assault, before he then left the scene.
“Officers attended and a 43 year old man from Ventnor was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink, driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, and inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.
“He remains in custody at this time and enquiries are ongoing.”
It was a busy few hours for the emergency services with Ventnor Fire Station’s appliance and crew re-deployed to a tractor fire in Atherfield.
Another toe rag off are streets I hope what a idiot
The police do a great job in catching scum like this. Just a shame they’re subsequently never served the appropriate punishment. I suspect it’ll be the same in this case, a menial fine, a ‘suspended sentence’ (in my opinion, a total waste of time), and probably a driving ban for a maximum of two years. No doubt there will be the usual ‘mitigating factors’, Oh the poor man has had a tough time and has mental health problems…… Not an excuse in my opinion, for driving a car in such a way that could have easily killed or seriously injured any number of innocent people….
A man of that age should know better than to drive a YARIS
But seriously what a plonker and why bash a passerby .
Stronger sentences would reduce these crimes but would
never eradicate them unfortunately
Trouble is he will get a driving ban and £80 fine and be driving within aweek then get stop again and told off back to court another fine alonger ban then do it again because they don’t give a s—
10 comments but only 4 showing. Oh dear oh dear, things are not what they used to be. Anyway, feel sorry for the police having to deal with this type of person on a daily basis, they must have the patience of saints.
Probably name and shame comments. Those pictures aren’t pixilated enough to disguise much.
