A 63-year-old man arrested following a fatal collision in Newport, which claimed the life of a 44-year-old cyclist, will face no further action.
Police have confirmed that they are no longer investigating the incident, which occurred at the end of last year, as a criminal matter.
The Godshill man had been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a collision involving a black Ford Transit van and a red electrically-assisted pushbike on Furrlongs, Pan, on 29th December.
The cyclist, a 44-year-old man from Newport, was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital before being flown to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. He was placed on life support but tragically died during the early hours of New Year’s Eve.
As previously reported by Island Echo, specialists from the mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit carried out a forensic examination of the scene following the crash.
The road was cordoned off between Royal Exchange and Manor Crescent while emergency services and investigators dealt with the incident.
Police investigations established that a black Ford Transit had made contact with the cyclist, with the 63-year-old subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was later released under investigation while officers continued their enquiries.
It has now been confirmed that the man has been released with no further action to be taken against him.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that the collision is no longer being investigated as a criminal matter.
