A 44-year-old man from Newport has tragically died in hospital following a hit-and-run collision in Newport, with the driver suspected of being responsible released under investigation.
It was shortly after 16:30 on Monday afternoon (29th December) that emergency services responded to reports of an injured cyclist on the ground at Furrlongs, Pan, as reported by Island Echo.
The man, who was riding a red electrically-assisted pushbike, was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital and then flown to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
Specialists from the mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit were called in to conduct a forensic examination of the crash scene, with investigations soon leading Police to discovering that a black Ford Transit Van had made contact with the cyclist.
Yesterday, it was revealed that a 63-year-old man from Godshill had been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
It is alleged that the vehicle did not stop at the scene.
Now, in a tragic update, it has been confirmed that the cyclist, who was placed on life support, has died. He passed away during the early hours of this morning (New Year’s Eve).
His family is being supported by specially-trained officers.
The Godshill man arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury to the cyclist, and ultimately now his death, has been released under investigation to allow Police to conduct further enquiries.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary is renewing its appeal for witnesses to come forward.
Anyone who witnessed this collision, and anyone with relevant dash cam, CCTV or doorbell camera footage is asked to get in touch, if you haven’t done so already.
Anyone in the area at the time who saw anything they believe may be relevant to the investigation can report it via 101 using the reference 44250583390.

How terribly sad. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
Prayers to the family. I can’t imagine how much you must all be going through. May you find strength in each other.
Who said it was a hit and run ?
Well he didn’t stop seeing if he could help/call ambulance did he?just drive off “that’s a hit and run in eyes of the law”and pretty sure his family do not care for your interpretation of the law,.
In such situations every second is vital,
minutes could save lives, to drive off from an
accident is shocking.
There are NO excuses.
Full force of the law on this one is required.
Who said it a hit and run ?? That’s a lie for start
‘It is alleged that the vehicle did not stop at the scene.’ Which bit of that don’t you get?
Sorry for your loss m8 xx
Well if the car didnt stop after the accident , which it clearly didnt because um …. its not there is it ?? What would you call it ?
So very dreadful
Very sad news.
It’s about time the island started installing cycle lanes
like they do in the big smoke, much safer for everyone.
Roads will be narrower and it stops vehicles speeding
and cyclists can cycle safely to their destination.
The world is meant to be go green, therefore cycles are the
future, NOT VEHICLES!
Also more CCTV needs to be installed so when accidents etc
happen, the situation is captured on film and can provide
answers quickly rather than people jumping to conclusions.
That’s it, use a sad event to get on your little soapbox. Me me me me me
If there was more safety and law and order on island roads
such events may never happen.
CCTV sees what goes on and cycle lanes
provide safety for cyclists.
The island needs to implement so many things
to make roads safe.
Sadiq Khan made the big smoke safe, the island
needs a Sadiq Khan.
You’re a tiresome Northern know-it-all bore who actually thinks that by endlessly droning on, you may have some influence. No one cares what you think. Especially with your naive and downright stupid support for Khan, the man who has made London anything but safe.
Jumping to conclusions? That’s a joke coming from you.
I just want to see safer roads for everyone
20mph is plenty.
Know when to Stfu
