A tractor and baler unit have been destroyed by fire in Atherfield this evening (Wednesday).
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is on scene with 2 appliances from Newport and Ventnor, with a water carrier from Freshwater en-route.
Crews are using a main jet to tackle the flames, which have engulfed the farm machinery in a field off the country lane that connects Atherfield to Yafford.
The fire was reported just before 19:15 with thick, black smoke seen billowing into the skies.
Thankfully, the blaze has been contained and prevented from spreading to the surrounding field.
Atherfield Road, between New Road and Southdown, has been blocked in both directions as firefighters deal with the fire.
No one has been injured in the incident.
UPDATE @ 21:00 – The Claas tractor and round bailer have been completely destroyed by the blaze, with fire control reporting an area of around 30x30m of staw stubble surrounding the machinery being charred too.
Residents around Atherfield and Chale are reporting that water pressure is low as fire crews draw water from the mains to dampen down the area.
