A car has overturned and come to rest on its roof in Ventnor this evening (Wednesday).
Police, fire and ambulance crews are on scene in the High Street at the bottom of Spring Hill, close to Tesco Express.
2 fire appliances from Ventnor and Shanklin are on scene, alongside several resources from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service including an operational commander.
The incident occurred just before 18:55.
Police have closed the road at the bottom of Spring Hill.
UPDATE @ 20:30 – The road remains closed as engineers from Island Roads make safe a lamp post that has been damaged in the collision.
The red Toyota Yaris, which remains on its roof, is understood to have been coming down Spring Hill when the crash occurred.
The driver then fled the scene, according to reports.
Police have made an arrest nearby in connection with this evening’s incident. Hampshire Constabulary has been approached for a statement.
The road remains closed in the interests of safety but is expected to re-open once the Yaris has been recovered.
UPDATE @ 21:30 – The vehicle has now been recovered and the road re-opened.
Further updates are expected on Thursday morning.

I’ve loved Ventnor since I was a child. Can’t believe the news lately, so sad for what was the best unspoilt seaside town on the island (in my opinion) 🙁
Lol yeah it’s not even his car it’s his mums. Or it was. No wonder he ran… being drunk and high as well. Decent lad though usually, but he could have easily killed someone as people cross there all the time
