Police, ambulance and fire crews are in attendance at a road traffic collision on Racecourse Roundabout this evening (Saturday).
The incident occurred shortly after 22:45 this evening and has seen a vehicle – a Red Smart Car – end up across the lane used by traffic coming from Wootton heading to East Cowes or Newport after it hit a tree.
The vehicle has sustained heavy front-end damage with its airbags deployed.
A large scale emergency response has been deployed to the scene including the Enhanced Care Paramedic from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
2 appliances from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are also at the scene carrying out efforts to free 2 casualties – a woman who was driving and her male passenger – from the vehicle.
Vehicles heading to Newport or East Cowes are unable to use the roundabout and are instead diverting locally using Park Road and Brocks Copse Road respectively.
Southern Vectis Route 9 and 5 buses are also diverting.
UPDATE @ 23:40 – 1 elderly male casualty has been helped from the passenger seat of the vehicle into an ambulance.
The fire service have stood down from the incident as a result.
UPDATE @ 00:25 – The vehicle has been recovered and the road has been re-opened once again.
UPDATE ON SUNDAY – Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary have confirmed that the driver, a woman in her 50s sustained ‘minor injuries’.

Surprised the coast guard weren’t involved in this major incident. 2 fire crews needed to free casualties from a barely damaged 2 seater.
Did the giant key fall out the back?
What an elderly male and a lady in her 50s?. If that’s what you think YOU must me on something.
And at 10.45 too, well before the smack/snort happy hour
I can assure you it definitely wasn’t drug related thank you very much! What a disrespectful comment when people’s family are in hospital!
This is why OAP’s who are on drugs should not drive
Reading the report looks like the elderly gentleman had a medical incident. Hope they are both ok.
It says the driver was a woman !
Maybe it’s time for her to hand in her licence…. Unless of course she had a medical episode. We don’t know the facts…
I can’t believe this 2 seater mercedes benz sports car ended up across both lanes..
I also know they are to powerful for the island roads and are allways driven at high speed they should be banned!
Was the air ambulance summoned too? I suppose it’s good training on an otherwise slack evening.
Bet the Fire service cut the roof off, even if there was no one in the car?
Glad all were ok and only suffered minor injuries. Seems rather OTT for one little car! I suppose they have their reasons.
If anything like this ever happened to me or mine, I’d hope they’d attend for me too. Well done to all our emergency services, thank you!
this is why people getting heart attacks, cancer etc is a good thing
